Brazil's scuba story is about contrast: blue-water islands like Fernando de Noronha, coral-rich protected areas like Abrolhos Marine National Park Brazil, and a mainland mix of wrecks and rocky reefs from Recife Brazil down to Florianopolis Brazil. Expect warm tropical water in the Northeast and offshore islands, and more variable temperatures on the Southeast coast where upwelling can drop temps without warning.
Places to explore
Arraial do Cabo is one of Brazils most dive-focused beach towns, known for boat access to caves, rocky reefs, and island walls shaped by the Cabo Frio upwelling. Diving is typically organized as guided boat trips from Praia dos Anjos, with operators like SeaQuest Sub and Acqua World running daily departures when sea state allows.
If you want the simplest warm-water plan, prioritize Fernando de Noronha or the Northeast coast (Maragogi Brazil and Recife Brazil) and aim for the drier part of the year. If you want variety and lower logistics cost, build a Southeast loop from Rio gateways through Buzios Brazil, Arraial Do Cabo Brazil, and island bases like Ilha Grande And Agra Dos Reis Brazil. For a true park experience on the mainland, add Laje De Santos Brazil on a calm sea day. For Abrolhos, most divers book a liveaboard window and treat it as the centerpiece rather than a day trip.
August - December
Buzios is a practical, varied scuba base: short boat rides to rocky islands, easy bay dives for training, and the option to chase clearer upwelling water on Arraial do Cabo day trips. Conditions are typically beginner-friendly when the sea is settled, but still feel like the Atlantic, with variable visibility and occasional thermoclines.
Fernando de Noronha is widely regarded as Brazil's best overall scuba destination, with roughly two dozen boat dives offering lava pinnacles, walls, caves and one historic wreck. Visibility often exceeds 30 m between August and December and water sits around 27°C to 29°C all year, so conditions are comfortable even on deeper dives.
Florianopolis is one of southern Brazil's most practical bases for boat diving, with regular runs to the Arvoredo area when seas allow. Because the Arvoredo archipelago is a strict biological reserve, operators focus recreational dives on the southern tip of Ilha do Arvoredo outside the reserve boundary.
Scuba here is about flexibility. The Ilha Grande bay gives you sheltered reefs and training-friendly shore entries, while Angra's outer islands add pinnacles, passages, and wrecks when the sea is calm.
Ilhabela delivers real-deal Brazilian coastal diving: boat rides across the Sao Sebastiao Channel to reefs, small caves, and an outsized list of shipwrecks. Beginner dives cluster around Ilha das Cabras and shallow wrecks like Aymore, while intermediate divers can step up to Velasquez and Theresina for classic reef-and-wreck profiles.
Maragogi is a warm-water, shallow-reef destination where the reef line sits close to shore and most dives are done by small boats. Operators like Pro Dive run beginner programs and certified diver outings on the coral barrier in front of Ponta de Mangue and Peroba, with many dives staying in the 6 m to 15 m range.
Paraty's bay and island chain create a sheltered classroom for warm-water Atlantic diving. Local boats reach Ilha dos Meros, Ilha Comprida, Ilha dos Ganchos, and Ilha Catimbau for rocky reefs, sponges, and schooling fish, often in calm conditions.
Recife is one of Brazil's most underrated wreck destinations. Local operators focus on an offshore cluster of purpose-sunk and historic wrecks that now function as artificial reefs, with many dives landing in the 18 m to 25 m range.
Bonito's scuba scene is small but world-class in its niche: guided freshwater dives in sinkholes and flooded caves. The headline is Abismo Anhumas, where a 72 m descent drops you into a vast cavern lake for clear-water diving.
Abrolhos is boat-diving at its most dramatic in Brazil: chapeiroes (mushroom-shaped coral pinnacles), park-managed moorings, and historic wreck remains inside a protected marine national park. Expect expedition-style days from Caravelas with guided dives, and in winter months, surface intervals often include humpback whale sightings (observation-only).
Laje de Santos delivers Sao Paulo's most iconic blue-water boat diving inside a protected no-take marine park. Dives range from sheltered granite slopes to deep parcels with schooling fish, turtles, and the occasional ray or pelagic visitor.
Plan by region. Offshore islands and the Northeast are commonly warm at 26°C to 29°C. The Southeast (Rio to Sao Paulo) can swing from 18°C to 26°C due to upwelling and cold fronts, and visibility can change fast after rain. Abrolhos and Laje De Santos can have current and drift-style diving; carry an SMB and be comfortable with negative entries when advised. Farther south near Florianopolis, winter water can drop to about 17°C to 21°C and winds can spike to 25 km/h to 40 km/h, so seasickness planning matters.
