Safety And Conservation

Addu diving is operator-friendly, but currents and wreck hazards are real. Plan channels by tide, carry an SMB, and treat the wreck as an advanced-profile day. Conservation is not optional: multiple sites are designated protected areas, and Addu is a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Strong currents and downcurrent
  • Secondary risk: Wreck overhead and entanglement
  • Emergency contact: Police Emergency (119)
  • Safety overview: Addu diving is operatorfriendly, but currents and wreck hazards are real.

Dive safety

Dive Safety

  • Carry an SMB on drift and boat dives.
  • Respect current limits. If you are not comfortable, switch to sheltered reefs.
  • For British Loyalty, keep a conservative depth and time plan and avoid enclosed spaces unless trained.
  • Use nitrox only if certified and trained.

Medical Support

The Ministry of Tourism publishes a list of hyperbaric treatment chambers across the Maldives. Serious dive incidents may require coordination and evacuation depending on chamber availability. Carry dive accident coverage that includes evacuation.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Strong currents and downcurrent

Channel dives can have very strong current and downcurrent. Stay close to the guide and carry an SMB. Skip channels if you are not confident.

  • Wreck overhead and entanglement

Wreck environments include sharp metal, lines, and overhead hazards. Maintain trim and buoyancy and avoid enclosed areas without training.

  • Mosquitoes near wetlands

Wetlands can be buggy at dusk. Use repellent and plan morning visits.

Wildlife and protected areas

Conservation Behavior

  • Use excellent buoyancy and never touch coral or wildlife.
  • At manta points, keep distance and never chase.
  • Follow protected-area rules for British Loyalty, Kuda Kandu, Kandihera and Maa Kandu Olhi, and Addu Nature Park.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when strong currents and downcurrent. Confirm local briefings before committing.
