What It Feels Like
Umkomaas is the classic launch point for Aliwal Shoal boat diving, with operators like Aliwal Dive Centre and ScubaCo running fast hops to sites only 5 km offshore. The mix is unusually punchy for recreational depths: ragged-tooth sharks tucked under ledges at Raggies Cave, sculpted reef architecture at Cathedral, and two headline wrecks, the MV Produce and Nebo Wreck. Conditions are open-ocean and can change quickly, so dives are often drift-style with blue-water ascents and boat pickups. If you time it for winter, you add the chance of the Sardine Run and humpback whales offshore.
Signature Sites
Start Here
Aliwal's signature reef architecture, with dramatic relief and swimthrough style openings.
The currentswept outer edge of the shoal, reaching about {{ 27 | distance:m }}.
Advanced
A sheltered overhang system where raggedtooth sharks congregate seasonally.
A large wreck resting around {{ 32 | distance:m }}.
Historic 1884 wreckage with recognizable features such as the boiler and structure remnants, typically down to about {{ 27 | distance:m }}.
Planning Playbook
Operator Checklist
- Plan for early mornings. Sea conditions often look best at sunrise, so meet times can be early and boats may launch soon after.
- Build a buffer. Add at least one extra day in your itinerary in case swell or wind cancels launches.
- Share your experience honestly. Tell the operator your certification, recent dives, and comfort range so they can pick appropriate sites (for example, Pinnacles vs the MV Produce).
- Ask about Nitrox and deep limits. Many signature dives sit around {{ 27 | distance:m }} to {{ 32 | distance:m }}. Nitrox can help with no-decompression time, but only if you are certified and your computer is set correctly.
- Expect drift procedures. Carry an SMB and know how to deploy it. Stay with the group on ascent and be ready for boat pickup.
Conditions Fallback
- Build a buffer. Add at least one extra day in your itinerary in case swell or wind cancels launches.
- Share your experience honestly. Tell the operator your certification, recent dives, and comfort range so they can pick appropriate sites (for example, Pinnacles vs the MV Produce).
- Ask about Nitrox and deep limits. Many signature dives sit around {{ 27 | distance:m }} to {{ 32 | distance:m }}. Nitrox can help with no-decompression time, but only if you are certified and your computer is set correctly.
Avoid
- Shark dives: verify compliance. MPA rules restrict shark attraction (chumming) without authorization. If you want a baited shark dive, confirm the operator's permit status and briefing standards.
