Shark caves, classic wrecks, and Sardine Run energy on South Africa's KZN South Coast

Overview
Aliwal Shoal is a subtropical reef and marine protected area about 5 km offshore from Umkomaas on South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Divers come for close-up shark encounters, especially ragged-tooth sharks ("raggies") sheltering under ledges in winter, plus two classic wrecks, the MV Produce and the SS Nebo. Expect boat launches through surf, fast site changes, and ocean conditions shaped by the warm Agulhas Current. When the seas line up, you can stack reef dives like Cathedral with pelagic edges like Outside Edge, then spend afternoons on quiet beaches or day-tripping to Durban and Oribi Gorge. Plan a flexible schedule with a weather buffer, pack for both warm and cool water, and let local skippers choose the best site each morning.
Seasonal aggregations at sites like Raggies Cave make winter diving feel like a documentary shoot.
Combine reef dives with the MV Produce (deep, fish-packed) and the historic Nebo Wreck.
A realistic base for chasing mid-winter pelagic action when conditions align, with operators coordinating around weather and sightings.
Most sites are only about 5 km from the beach, so you spend more time diving than commuting.
Top species linked to approved dive spots in Aliwal Shoal and Umkomaas.
