When To Go

Season planner for Aliwal Shoal and Umkomaas

Aliwal Shoal sits in a humid subtropical zone with summer rainfall and a drier, cooler winter. Water is warmed by the Agulhas Current, so diving is possible year-round, but your best window depends on the headline you want. Winter and spring (roughly May to November) are famous for ragged-tooth sharks, generally lower humidity, and the chance of humpback whales offshore. Mid-winter (May to August, most intense in June to July) is Sardine Run season, which is spectacular but unpredictable and weather-dependent. Summer (November to March) brings warmer water and more tropical fish life, with some operators running baited shark dives when sea conditions are safe and permits are in place.
