Season planner for Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's milder, warmer-water destinations, but it is still a four-season coast. Dec-Mar is the warmest window for long snorkels and minimal exposure protection, with water often around 20°C to 22°C and peak holiday crowds. Apr-May and Sep-Nov can be excellent shoulder seasons with fewer people and good diving flexibility. Jun-Aug brings cooler water (often 15°C to 17°C) plus more frequent fronts, stronger winds, and bigger swells, but visibility can improve between systems. Always check MetService marine forecasts and expect operators to pick sites based on wind direction.

Ideal: Warmer water supports longer surface time and training blocks. Choose light-wind days for line sessions.

Plan Carefully: Cold water and winter swells. Prioritize sheltered bays, pool training, and recovery.

Freediving in the Bay of Islands is highly dependent on wind, swell, and marine mammal presence (300 m inwater exclusion).

Bay of Islands is known for dolphin encounters on cruises. In the Marine Mammal Sanctuary, you must be out of the water within 300 m of any marine mammal, so treat dolphins as a surface experience rather than an in-water goal.

Winter and spring can bring migratory whales along the Northland coast. Book a wildlife cruise, and keep expectations flexible since sightings are never guaranteed.

New Zealand freediving depth competitions are often scheduled in late summer. If you want to extend the trip beyond Northland, watch the Freediving NZ calendar for nationals-style events.
