Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport is the main international gateway. Airport Express and regional rail services connect BER with central Berlin, where travelers can collect a rental car or transfer to local public transport. Straussee is the only one of the three that is straightforward as a no-car dive day: take the S-Bahn toward Strausberg and follow the operator's current directions from Strausberg-Stadt. Werbellinsee and Stechlinsee can be approached by regional rail plus bus or taxi, but a car is much more practical for cylinders, suits, multiple bags, and early or late base schedules. Do not plan a same-day three-lake circuit.

Approximately 55 km to Straussee, 85 km to Werbellinsee, and 120 km to Stechlinsee by road. • Usually under 1 hour to Straussee and roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hourss to the northern lakes by car, depending on traffic and the exact base.

Use public transport for Straussee and a car for a full three-lake itinerary. Rural bus frequency can be limited, particularly evenings, weekends, and outside summer. Parking may be controlled by a base, accommodation, or protected-area rule; never block forest roads or emergency access. Bicycles are useful for nondiver exploration but not a substitute for a vehicle carrying wet cold-water equipment. Download the VBB or rail itinerary before leaving reliable mobile coverage.
Germany is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens generally enter under free-movement rules with a valid identity document. Many other nationalities may visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a short-stay visa; others need a Schengen visa before travel. Passport validity, permitted activities, insurance evidence, and rules for minors depend on nationality and residence. Check the German Federal Foreign Office's current country-specific guidance and the carrier's document rules before booking. This destination has no separate visitor immigration process.
Straussee and Stechlinsee publish rental and fill services; Werbellinsee advertises local base support, but its 2026 relocation makes reconfirmation essential. Reserve uncommon suit sizes, drysuit systems, cold-water regulators, cylinders, and guides. Stechlinsee will not fill cylinders without valid technical inspection. Separate wet gear from passenger luggage, carry a waterproof changing mat and bins, and avoid transporting full cylinders unsecured. Airlines may accept empty, valve-open cylinders only under specific dangerous-goods rules, so rental is normally simpler. Confirm whether weights, computer, hood, gloves, and lights are included rather than assuming a full package.
Euro (EUR)
Cards are routine in Berlin, but rural dive bases, parking, seasonal kiosks, and small cafes may prefer cash or have limited terminals. Confirm payment methods when booking.
ATMs are easy to find in Berlin and larger towns such as Strausberg, but not at every lakeside entry. Withdraw before driving to Stechlinsee or remote Werbellinsee access.
230V • 50Hz • C, F
Bring a Type C or F adapter and verify that chargers are rated for 230V. A multi-port charger and power bank help when drying gear away from room sockets.
Communications
Germany has broad mobile and data coverage, but forested or rural shore sections can have weaker signal. Download maps, base directions, emergency access points, and booking confirmations before arrival. Tell a shore contact the planned lake, entry, route, team, and return time. EU roaming rules may apply to eligible plans; visitors from elsewhere should confirm roaming or use a local or regional eSIM.
Language
German is the operating language. English is common in Berlin and may be available at dive businesses, but do not assume an English technical or emergency briefing. Ask in advance, learn the terms for diving accident, emergency oxygen, lost diver, entry, and exit, and make sure every teammate understands the final site plan.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance plus dive-accident coverage that explicitly includes hyperbaric treatment, ambulance transfer, repatriation, and the maximum planned depth. Confirm that drysuit, night, wreck, deep, freedive, or ice activities are covered when relevant. A European Health Insurance Card can support eligible state care but is not a substitute for dive-specific evacuation and treatment coverage.
