When To Go
Season planner for Bonaire
Bonaire is a year-round destination, but not every month feels the same in the water. The island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so trip cancellations for storm risk are less of a defining factor than on many Caribbean itineraries. What changes more is the wind. Lighter fall conditions often make September through December the broadest sweet spot for scuba, freedive, and snorkel planning, while January through April stays very workable with slightly cooler-feeling air and occasional short showers. June through August brings stronger trade winds, which is great for Lac Bay windsports but can make exposed shore entries and freedive surfaces less relaxed later in the day.

Activity Drilldowns
OverallSep-Dec·Crowd:Moderate·Cost:Premium
Ideal: Often lighter winds, warm water around 28°C, and strong all-around conditions for mixed scuba, snorkel, and topside itineraries.
Plan Carefully: Trade winds commonly build toward roughly 28.0 kph to 35.0 kph, which can roughen more exposed shore plans.
Bonaire sits outside the main hurricane belt, so yearround planning is realistic.
ScubaSep-Dec·Crowd:Moderate·Cost:Moderate
Ideal: Calmer leeward conditions, warm water around 28°C, and strong visibility for shore and Klein Bonaire days.
Plan Carefully: Windier periods can add chop at exposed entries, so morning starts and protected sites matter more.
Westcoast scuba works yearround.
FreediveMar-May & Sep-Nov·Crowd:Low·Cost:Moderate
Ideal: Good odds of calmer morning surfaces and warm water around 28°C for line work and reef sessions.
Plan Carefully: Stronger trade winds near 30.0 kph can make later-day surface conditions less relaxed.
Freedivers should think by time of day as much as by month.
SnorkelApr-May & Sep-Dec·Crowd:Moderate·Cost:Moderate
Ideal: Comfortable warm water, clear shallows, and generally easier surface conditions for reef and Klein Bonaire snorkeling.
Plan Carefully: Windier weather can add surface chop at open entries, making boat trips and protected choices more attractive.
Snorkelers do best by mixing easy roadside sessions with one dedicated Klein Bonaire day.
TopsideJan-Apr·Crowd:Moderate·Cost:Moderate
Ideal: Pleasant touring weather around 29°C and a strong stretch for Washington, Rincon, and self-drive sightseeing.
Plan Carefully: Hotter-feeling afternoons and stronger winds can make long exposed drives or hikes more tiring.
Topside planning is less about storms and more about sun and wind.
