Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Brisbane Airport (BNE)
  • Typical transfer: 20 km drive
  • Entry requirement: Australia requires most visitors to hold a valid visa or electronic travel authority before arrival.
  • Getting around: Brisbane: public transport (trains, buses, and CityCat ferries) covers most visitor areas.

Getting There

Most travelers fly into Brisbane Airport (BNE) and use Brisbane as the logistics hub for both city time and island days.

Brisbane to Moreton Island (walk-on)

  • Passenger ferries and day cruises depart from Holt Street Wharf in Pinkenba and arrive at Tangalooma on the western side of Moreton Island.
  • This is the easiest option if you are not bringing a vehicle. Many day cruises bundle return transfers with activities like guided snorkeling.

Brisbane to Moreton Island (with a 4wd)

  • Vehicle-capable services such as the Micat ferry depart from the Port of Brisbane and land on Moreton Island on sand-access points (terminal varies by schedule).
  • Only attempt independent exploration if you have real 4WD experience and the correct permits.

Brisbane also works as a hub for boat diving to outer reefs such as Flinders Reef when operators run trips and sea conditions allow.

Airports

1

Brisbane Airport

BNE • YBBN

20 km • 20 km drive

Queensland's main international and domestic gateway, with direct links to major Australian cities and many Asia-Pacific hubs.

Transport: Airtrain to city, Rideshare and taxis, Car rental

2

Gold Coast Airport

OOL • YBCG

90 km • 90 km drive

A secondary airport that can work well for a multi-stop coastal itinerary (Gold Coast plus Brisbane).

Transport: Shuttle bus, Car rental, Rideshare

Getting Around

  • Brisbane: public transport (trains, buses, and CityCat ferries) covers most visitor areas. Rideshare is widely available. A rental car is helpful if you are moving between ferry terminals, dive shops, and suburbs.
  • Moreton Island: outside resort areas, transport is 4WD-only on sand. If you are not experienced, book guided tours for dune and lighthouse days rather than self-driving.

Entry Requirements

Australia requires most visitors to hold a valid visa or electronic travel authority before arrival. Common options include the eVisitor and the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) for eligible passports, while others need a Visitor visa. Biosecurity rules are strict, so declare food and outdoor gear as required.

Check the Australian Department of Home Affairs for the correct visa pathway for your passport and travel purpose.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Rentals and fills: Brisbane dive centres can handle gear rental, air fills, and servicing. If you are diving on a boat charter, confirm whether weights and cylinders are included.
  • Island logistics: on-island operators around Tangalooma can support wreck snorkeling and diving with equipment hire and briefings.
  • Protect your gear on ferries: use a tough duffel, keep electronics in a dry bag, and expect salt spray on windy crossings.
  • Cold and wind management: even on sunny days, the boat ride can feel cool. Pack a windbreaker and warm layer for surface intervals.
  • Charging: bring a multi-port charger and spare batteries for cameras and lights. Island charging options can be more limited than city hotels.

Practicalities

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Cards are widely accepted in Brisbane. On Moreton Island, resort areas accept cards, but independent camping and remote areas are easier with some cash for small purchases and contingencies.

Brisbane has abundant ATMs. On Moreton Island, ATM access can be limited or nonexistent depending on where you stay, so plan ahead and carry backup payment options.

Electricity

230V 50Hz I

Bring a Type I adapter if you are traveling from North America or Europe. Most modern chargers are dual-voltage, but check your camera and dive-light chargers.

Communications

Brisbane has strong mobile coverage and fast Wi-Fi in most hotels. On Moreton Island, coverage can be patchy outside resort hubs. Download offline maps, marine-park zoning maps, and ferry confirmations before you leave the mainland.

Language

English is the main language. You will also see Indigenous place names used increasingly, including Mulgumpin for Moreton Island and Quandamooka Country for the traditional owner region.

Insurance

Carry travel insurance that covers diving and medical evacuation. If you plan deeper scuba or remote freediving, consider a diving-specific policy for decompression illness and chamber treatment.
