Safety And Conservation
The main safety themes are wind exposure, summer heat, cooler water outside peak season, boat traffic around coves, and compliance with protected-area rules. Conservation is not cosmetic here: Posidonia meadows, rocky habitats, fisheries, and seabird landscapes are central to the destination.
Top Risks
- Primary risk: Protected-area authorization is not optional
- Secondary risk: Wind and exposure can change the site plan
- Emergency contact: 112 Spain (112)

Dive safety
Dive with an authorized local center, carry DSMB and spool, keep excellent buoyancy over Posidonia and rocky bottoms, and accept site swaps when wind or visibility changes. Newer divers should choose sheltered training profiles and avoid deeper rocks until comfortable. Freedivers should use a buddy, buoy, conservative depths, and instructor support. Snorkelers should avoid exposed headlands, boat lanes, and surgey rocks.
For emergencies in Spain, call 112. For maritime emergencies, Salvamento Maritimo lists 900 202 202 and radio channels. DAN Europe provides 24/7 diving emergency support. Almeria city has major hospital services, including Hospital Universitario Torrecardenas. Confirm hyperbaric evacuation procedures with your dive operator and insurer before diving, because chamber access and routing can depend on the incident and location.
Snorkel and freedive safety
Protected-area authorization is not optional
Autonomous scuba in protected waters requires prior authorization, and the practical visitor route is booking an authorized local operator. Do not treat the park as a self-guided free-for-all.
Wind and exposure can change the site plan
Cabo de Gata can look calm at one beach and be rough around a headland. Expect operators to swap routes for safety, visibility, and reef protection.
Summer heat and beach quotas
July and August bring heat, intense sun, high demand, and access controls at famous beaches. Start early, carry water, and keep a backup cove plan.
Wildlife and protected areas
Do not collect plants, animals, rocks, shells, or archaeological material. Do not touch, kick, or anchor on Posidonia oceanica. Spearfishing is prohibited in the marine strip under official park guidance. Recreational fishing is restricted, drones are restricted, and anchoring is prohibited in regulated areas, rocky bottoms, marked zones, and seagrass. Use marked routes, authorized providers, and low-impact sunscreen and sun clothing.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when protected-area authorization is not optional. Confirm local briefings before committing.
