Safety And Conservation

Cabo Pulmo's magic comes with a tradeoff: it is remote, conditions can shift quickly, and the reef is fragile. Plan conservatively, dive within your training, and treat conservation rules as part of the safety system.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Remote location and limited services
  • Secondary risk: Wind, swell, and surge
  • Emergency contact: Mexico emergency services (911)
  • Safety overview: Cabo Pulmo's magic comes with a tradeoff: it is remote, conditions can shift quickly, and the reef is fragile.

Dive safety

  • Dive with an established operator that runs oxygen, radios, and conservative call-off policies.
  • Bring and deploy an SMB if you surface away from the boat, especially on current-prone sites.
  • If you are targeting bull shark dives, follow the operator briefing precisely and avoid any harassment behavior.
  • Stay hydrated and manage heat stress between dives, especially from June to September.

The nearest full hospital services are in the Los Cabos corridor (San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas) and in La Paz. For suspected decompression illness, activate emergency services, administer oxygen, and contact DAN early. A recompression chamber is available in Cabo San Lucas (call ahead for coordination).

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Remote location and limited services

Cabo Pulmo has limited medical infrastructure and few supplies. Bring essential meds, keep a conservative dive profile, and have a clear evacuation plan.

  • Wind, swell, and surge

Afternoon winds can build surface chop and reduce visibility. Surge over reef bars increases the risk of coral contact. If conditions deteriorate, call the session.

  • Tropical storm season

Late summer and early fall can bring tropical systems to Baja California Sur. Build buffer days and buy flexible bookings where possible.

  • Bull shark dives require discipline

Follow your guide exactly. No flash harassment, no chasing, no touching, and no "hero" behavior. If you are not comfortable, skip it.

Wildlife and protected areas

  • Cabo Pulmo is a no-take marine protected area. Fishing and collecting are prohibited.
  • Do not touch coral or wildlife. Keep fins, cameras, and gauges controlled over shallow reef structure.
  • Your operator should use approved moorings where provided. Avoid any anchoring behavior that could damage coral.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen or physical sun protection (rashguards) to reduce chemical load.
  • Support operators and lodges that invest in conservation and follow park rules, including fee compliance.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when remote location and limited services. Confirm local briefings before committing.
