Overview
Causeway Coast and Rathlin Island combine serious cold-water diving with one of Europe's most recognizable coastal landscapes. Local day boats reach HMS Drake, Lochgarry, the Skerries, Farganlack Point and kelp-covered reefs, while Ballintoy Harbour and selected mainland entries add shore-diving flexibility. The attraction is variety: First World War wrecks, steep walls, drift routes, caverns, limestone gullies, seals and year-round harbour porpoise habitat.
This is not a turn-up-and-dive destination. Rathlin Sound can be fiercely tidal, Atlantic swell can close exposed sites, and the public ferry is independent of dive charters. Plan with a local operator, expect the skipper to choose sites around slack water and weather, and bring robust thermal protection. Non-divers have an unusually strong parallel itinerary through the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, Dunluce Castle, Rathlin's West Light and seabird cliffs.
