When to go

Best time to visit Channel Islands

The Channel Islands are a genuine year round destination, but the character of trips shifts with the seasons.

Best overall window

August to October

Warmest water, more frequent calm seas, and some of the best underwater visibility of the year, with water often around 18°C to 20°C.

Outside that window

Cooler, wetter months with winter storms and stronger winds; trips still run but are more likely to be canceled or rerouted.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

Ferries and whale watching boats commonly spot southbound and then northbound gray whales passing through the Santa Barbara Channel, with best chances on calm winter and early spring days.

  • Blue and humpback whales

    Best for Topside

    Jun to Sep

As upwelling enriches offshore waters, blue and humpback whales feed in and around the Channel, sometimes appearing on dive crossings or dedicated whale watching trips from Ventura, Oxnard, and Santa Barbara.

  • Kelp forest peak growth

    Best for Scuba, Freedive, Snorkel

    Aug to Oct

Warm, stable late summer and fall conditions help kelp forests reach full canopy and boost underwater visibility, delivering classic golden light cathedral dives for scuba and freedivers.

  • Wildflower bloom and green hills

    Best for Topside

    Mar to Apr

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Winter rains transform normally dry island plateaus into green grasslands dotted with wildflowers, making early spring ideal for hikers and photographers who do not mind some wind and cool temperatures.

  • Sea lion pupping and rookeries

    Best for Topside, Scuba, Snorkel

    May to Jul

Sea lion rookeries on Santa Barbara Island, San Miguel, and other haul outs are especially active in late spring and early summer; maintain extra distance, avoid loud noise, and respect closed areas.

Always true for this destination
  • The islands have a Mediterranean climate with relatively stable air temperatures in the mid 18°C range year round, but ocean and wind conditions change quickly and vary by island.
Seasonal cautions
  • May to Jul, Nov: Mild air temperatures with variable wind and fog; seas can be lumpy but crossings are usually manageable for prepared travelers.
  • Dec to Apr: Cooler, wetter months with winter storms and stronger winds; trips still run but are more likely to be canceled or rerouted.
