Most international visitors fly to Ruder Boskovic Airport (DBV), roughly 23 km from Dubrovnik. The official airport guidance places the road transfer at about 30 to 35 minutes in normal conditions, with up to 1 hour sensible in summer traffic. Official shuttles connect the airport with Dubrovnik, and taxis, pre-booked transfers, and selected public buses also operate.
Elafiti access starts mainly at Gruz port. Jadrolinija passenger line 807 runs year-round between Dubrovnik, Kolocep, Lopud, and Sudurad on Sipan. A second route serves Dubrovnik, Lopud, and Sipan. Timetables change by season, and operational notices can alter a day's pattern, so plan from the current official schedule rather than a saved blog timetable.

Dubrovnik's primary international gateway has a strongly seasonal route network and sits southeast of the city near Cilipi. It is the practical airport for a Dubrovnik, Lapad, Gruz, or Elafiti itinerary.

Dubrovnik's Old City is pedestrian-only. Libertas buses connect Pile with Gruz, Lapad, Babin Kuk, the hospital, and outer neighborhoods; buy before boarding when possible and verify the current timetable. Taxis and app-based rides operate on the mainland but cannot enter the walled core.
Kolocep and Lopud are car-free. Walking is the default, with limited local golf-cart or small-vehicle transfers where permitted. Sipan is larger and has a local road and bus connection between its main settlements. A rental car is unnecessary for a city-and-islands itinerary and can become a parking burden near the Old City.
Croatia is in the Schengen Area. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens should travel with a valid national identity card or passport under their applicable rules. Visa-exempt non-EU visitors are generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period; travelers from visa-required nationalities need the appropriate Schengen visa.
For non-EU passports, official EU guidance generally requires validity for at least 3 months after the planned Schengen departure and issuance within the previous 10 years. The Entry/Exit System is fully operational and records eligible non-EU travelers at external borders. At the research timestamp, ETIAS was not operating and no applications were being collected, although the EU expected a later 2026 start. Recheck the official EU and Croatian sources immediately before travel because nationality-specific rules and system launch dates can change.

Multi-day packages may include tanks and weights while charging separately for full kit, so confirm inclusions before travel. Bring a personal computer, mask, and exposure accessories when fit matters.
Airline sports-baggage policies and seasonal route rules change, so pre-book scuba baggage directly with the carrier. Drain and dry the BCD, remove batteries where required, protect the regulator in cabin baggage when permitted, and travel with an empty, valve-removed cylinder only if the airline expressly accepts it.
Public ferries can carry normal luggage, but island paths, steps, and car-free access favor compact wheeled bags or backpacks. Store heavy dive gear at the center and take only swim equipment on independent Elafiti days.
Euro (EUR)
Croatia uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted in Dubrovnik hotels, restaurants, attractions, and larger operators, but small island vendors, local transfers, and seasonal services may still prefer cash. Check whether dive extras such as photos or small equipment charges are cash-only.
ATMs are common in Dubrovnik, Gruz, and Lapad but less dependable on the smaller islands. Prefer machines operated by established banks, review any conversion prompt before accepting it, and withdraw before a full-day Elafiti trip.

Bring a Type C or F adaptor when your plug differs. Most modern phone, camera, and laptop chargers are dual-voltage, but verify the input label before connecting; an adaptor does not convert voltage.
Communications
Croatia participates in EU and EEA roaming rules, so eligible European plans generally use domestic-rate roaming subject to fair-use limits. Other visitors can buy a Croatian SIM or eSIM. Coverage is normally strongest in Dubrovnik and inhabited villages, while cliffs, caves, remote coves, and open-water routes can create dead zones.
Download ferry tickets, operator contacts, offline maps, and accommodation directions before an island day. Remember that nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are outside the EU roaming zone for many plans, so a cross-border day trip can trigger different charges.
Language
Croatian is the official language. English is widely used in Dubrovnik tourism, dive centers, hotels, and transport. Learn basic greetings and the Croatian place-name variants Kolocep or Kalamota, Lopud, Sipan, Sudurad, and Gruz because timetables and signs may use local spellings.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers scuba or freediving to the planned depth and certification level, including search and rescue, medical evacuation, recompression treatment, missed transport, and weather-related activity cancellation. Standard health or card benefits may exclude overhead, technical, solo, or depth-limit breaches.
EU and eligible travelers may use an EHIC for medically necessary public care, but it is not a substitute for travel or dive-accident insurance and does not guarantee private-clinic, repatriation, or island-evacuation costs. Save insurer and DAN details offline.
