What It Feels Like
Fakarava is a pass-diving destination first. Local operators such as Dive Spirit Fakarava, Kaina Plongee, O2 Fakarava, Topdive, and Tetamanu Diving plan dives around tides because the best sites only work when current, visibility, and entry timing line up. Garuae in the north is broad, exposed, and dramatic. Tumakohua in the south is the shark-heavy signature zone with the Wall of Sharks and the famous June to July grouper aggregation.
Signature Sites
Start Here

Classic Garuaearea scenery with coral structure and fish life on a more reefforward profile.
The southpass main event with sharks, groupers, barracuda, and compact, currentshaped channel diving.
Level Up
The famous southpass shark concentration where grey reef sharks can seem to form a moving wall in the channel.
Planning Playbook
Operator Checklist
- Reserve dives before flights if you are targeting June to July grouper-spawning timing or peak travel periods. Ask operators which pass they expect to dive, whether Nitrox is available, and whether you should split north and south lodging. North-only stays are easier for mixed groups. Split stays are stronger for shark-focused or photography trips.
Conditions Fallback
- Reserve dives before flights if you are targeting June to July grouper-spawning timing or peak travel periods. Ask operators which pass they expect to dive, whether Nitrox is available, and whether you should split north and south lodging. North-only stays are easier for mixed groups. Split stays are stronger for shark-focused or photography trips.
Avoid
- Do not ignore pass currents are serious advisories from local operators.
