Entry Requirements

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France, so entry rules depend on passport and transit routing. Many travelers can enter visa-free for tourism, but you should verify your own requirements through official France and airline sources before departure.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Bring essential personal gear because local replacement options are limited. Domestic baggage allowances can be tighter than long-haul allowances, so plan camera or freedive gear carefully.

Practicalities

Currency

CFP Franc (XPF)

French Polynesia uses XPF. Cards help in larger settings, but Fakarava is remote, so cash still matters for tips, small purchases, and backup payments.

Solve cash needs on Tahiti before flying when possible, then confirm current local access with your accommodation.

Electricity

110V and 220V 50/60Hz A, B, C, E

Bring a universal adapter and assume outlets may be limited in smaller pensions.

Communications

Connectivity is better than it used to be, but you should still treat Fakarava as remote. Download maps, documents, and confirmations before flying.

Language

French and Tahitian dominate locally. English is common enough in tourism, but basic French helps.

Insurance

Carry travel insurance that covers scuba, evacuation, domestic disruption, and equipment if relevant.

Packing list

Pack for sun, boats, and remoteness: mask, SMB, rash guard, hat, sunglasses, dry bag, seasickness medication, first-aid basics, and cash.
