Overview

Two legendary passes, shark-rich drift dives, and a lagoon that still feels wild

Fakarava is one of the Tuamotu's defining dive atolls: Garuae Pass in the north, Tumakohua Pass in the south, strong tide-driven pass diving, and a UNESCO biosphere reserve setting that still feels remote. Most trips are land-based through local pensions and dive centers rather than built around liveaboards. Divers come for Garuae drifts, the Wall of Sharks, and the June to July camouflage grouper aggregation. Non-divers can still build a great trip around snorkeling, biking near Rotoava, pearl farms, pink-sand motu outings, and slow lagoon days.

What Makes It Special

  • Two world-class passes

Garuae and Tumakohua are different enough that diving both changes the whole trip.

  • Shark encounters with ecological context

Grey reef sharks are the headline, but the full system includes grouper aggregations, barracuda, reef fish, coral structure, and strong tidal flow.

  • Land-based, local-operator trip

Fakarava is usually planned around small guesthouses, local dive boats, and simple island logistics rather than a liveaboard route.

  • Strong non-diver backup

Pearl farms, lagoon snorkeling, motu picnics, biking, and quiet village life make it workable for mixed groups.
