Cold-water wrecks, kelp walls and curious grey seals off Northumberland
Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.
Most fly-in visitors use Newcastle International Airport, approximately 80 km by road from Seahouses. A hire car or pre-booked transfer is the simplest solution for dive gear and early departures. Edinburgh Airport is a broader international alternative but requires a longer southbound transfer.
By rail, Chathill is the closest station at roughly 6 km, but service is limited and normally absent on Sundays. Alnmouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed have more regular trains; continue by taxi or the X18 and 418 bus corridor after checking the current timetable. Every Farne water activity then departs by boat from Seahouses Harbour. Reserve the boat before travel and arrive early for parking, ticket collection and loading.
Newcastle International Airport
NCL • EGNT
Approximately 80 km to Seahouses • About 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road in normal conditions
The nearest major airport, with domestic, European and hub connections. It is the practical first choice for visitors carrying dive or swim equipment.
Transport: Hire car, Pre-booked private transfer, Metro or taxi to Newcastle, then rail and taxi or bus
Edinburgh Airport
EDI • EGPH
Approximately 150 km to Seahouses • About 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes by road in normal conditions
A useful alternative for long-haul and wider European connectivity, followed by a cross-border rail or road transfer into Northumberland.
Transport: Hire car, Private transfer, Tram or bus to Edinburgh, then rail to Berwick-upon-Tweed and onward taxi or bus
A car is the easiest option for early boats, bulky kit and poor-weather alternatives, but Seahouses parking fills quickly in peak season. Park only in designated council facilities and allow time to walk gear to the harbour. Public transport is possible but slower: the X18 coastal bus links Newcastle, Alnwick, Seahouses and Berwick, while the 418 supports the Alnwick-Berwick corridor. Chathill rail service is sparse, so Alnmouth or Berwick plus taxi or bus is usually safer. No public ferry operates as general transport to the islands; all access is through booked commercial boats.
International visitors need a passport valid for the entire UK stay and may need a visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation according to nationality and travel status. The official ETA fee was GBP 20 at the research date, but eligibility and fees can change, so verify directly on GOV.UK before booking. A standard visitor stay is commonly permitted for up to 6 months, subject to individual immigration rules.
There is no separate border process for recreational dive equipment. For Inner Farne landings, local biosecurity rules apply: clean mud and organic material from footwear, use sealed bags, and do not carry plants, loose seeds, compost or other material that could introduce pests.
Confirm cylinder size, valve type, gas availability, weights, rental drysuits and equipment storage directly with the charter or dive center. Many local dive boats use diver lifts and carry oxygen and first-aid equipment, but facilities vary. Pack critical spares because same-day specialist replacement is limited in a small village. Guided Northern Latitude swim trips publish a full 5mm kit package, while freedive trips may offer limited hire.
Protect regulators, cameras and computers as cabin baggage where airline rules allow, drain and dry buoyancy equipment, and check lithium-battery restrictions. After diving, follow conservative no-fly guidance and do not schedule a flight or long altitude journey immediately after the final dive.
Pound sterling (GBP)
Cards are widely accepted for accommodation, restaurants and major attractions. Keep some cash or a backup card for small kiosks, parking contingencies and operators whose onboard facilities are limited. Always confirm whether a charter balance is due by bank transfer, card or cash before arrival.
Seahouses has limited cash access compared with a city, and an individual machine may be out of service or charge a fee. Withdraw before reaching the coast if cash is required, using Newcastle, Alnwick or Berwick as more resilient alternatives.
230V • 50Hz • G
Bring a Type G adapter and use only dual-voltage chargers where required. Accommodation may have few convenient sockets for cameras, lights and heated-vest batteries, so a compliant multi-port USB charger is useful.
Communications
UK mobile coverage is generally usable in Seahouses but can weaken offshore, behind island rock or during poor weather. Coverage differs by network, so download booking details, tide information, maps and emergency numbers before boarding. Do not rely on a phone as the primary at-sea emergency tool; the skipper's marine VHF is the correct link to HM Coastguard. Most accommodation offers Wi-Fi, but bandwidth and reliability vary in peak season.
Language
English is the working language for operators, emergency services and visitor sites. Dive briefings use standard UK cold-water and boat-diving terminology; ask the skipper to clarify local site names, tide language and recall signals before kitting up.
Insurance
Carry travel insurance covering weather cancellation, missed activities, medical treatment, evacuation and repatriation. Scuba divers should add recognized dive accident and hyperbaric coverage valid for planned depths, wreck profiles and UK boat diving. Freedivers and open-water swimmers should verify that guided cold-water wildlife swimming is not excluded. Read excesses and cancellation triggers carefully because a skipper's safety cancellation may be treated differently from a general trip interruption.
