Cold-water wrecks, kelp walls and curious grey seals off Northumberland
Overview
The Farne Islands are a compact North Sea archipelago where boat dives combine grey seal encounters, kelp-draped Whin Sill reefs, vertical rock, tidal drifts and historic wreckage. Seahouses is the practical base: divers board local day boats in the harbour, while non-divers choose sail-around wildlife cruises or seasonal Inner Farne landings. The destination rewards Advanced Open Water-level, drysuit-comfortable divers, although local skippers can place less experienced teams on sheltered, shallower routes when conditions allow.
Timing is wildlife-led but weather-controlled. May to July brings the full seabird spectacle, late summer and early autumn often offer the most comfortable diving, and September to October is especially attractive for seal-focused trips. Strong tides, exposed crossings and fast-changing visibility make local skipper judgement essential. Build spare days into the itinerary, expect site substitutions, and treat a route change as normal North Sea planning rather than a downgrade.
A large resident Atlantic grey seal colony creates unusually close, animal-led encounters on shallow reef and kelp dives.
One Seahouses charter can rotate among walls, gullies, boulder fields, tidal drifts and wrecks from roughly 6 m to beyond .
