When To Go

Season planner for Florianopolis

Florianopolis has a humid subtropical pattern: warm, busy summers and cooler, windier winters. For water time, plan for sea temperatures that can sit near 24°C to 26°C in peak summer and dip toward 16°C to 18°C in winter. Cold fronts can bring stronger wind and larger swell, which is the main reason Arvoredo-area dive boats cancel. If you stay flexible, you can always swap between offshore dives, sheltered island snorkeling, lagoon sports, hikes, and food-focused days.

Ideal: Warmer water and calmer seas increase comfort and safety for open-water sessions.

Plan Carefully: Cooler water and more swell. Shift to pool training, sheltered technique work, and only do open-water on clean forecast windows.

Treat swell as the main limiter for freediving safety.

Ideal: Warmest water and the best chance of calm seas for islands and coves.

Plan Carefully: Colder water and more wind and swell. Prioritize lagoons, guided boat trips, and sheltered beaches.

For Ilha do Campeche, plan ahead: access is regulated and weather can cancel crossings.

Ideal: Best mix of warm beach days, longer daylight, and generally comfortable evenings.

The island is long and traffic can be the real limiter.

Turtles are a headline encounter on many Arvoredo-area dives and Xavier snorkeling trips. Keep distance, avoid blocking their path to the surface, and never touch.
