Overview
French Alpine Lakes is a land-based freshwater destination built around three distinct hubs. Lake Annecy supplies the headline dive: the preserved paddle-steamer wreck Le France at 42 m, plus deep walls at Roc de Chere and Duingt. Lac du Bourget adds shore access, steep training slopes and sites such as Challiere and Grotte de Lamartine. The French shore of Lake Geneva offers shallow weed beds, training wrecks, stone walls and very deep drop-offs around Thonon-les-Bains, Publier, Evian, Meillerie and Saint-Gingolph. Summer makes logistics easiest, but a warm surface does not remove the cold-water challenge below the thermocline. Visibility can change quickly, silt is easy to disturb and some signature profiles require advanced depth, wreck, drysuit or technical skills. Beginners are well served through supervised first dives and courses, while freedivers and snorkelers gain the best access from late spring through early autumn.
Annecy concentrates iconic deep wreck and wall diving, Bourget excels at access and training, and the French Lake Geneva shore adds weed beds, wreck clusters and major drop-offs.
The region supports first dives, Open Water development, drysuit and altitude procedures, deep specialties, wreck skills, sidemount and advanced freshwater navigation.
