When To Go

Season planner for Kaikoura

Kaikoura is a four-season destination where ocean conditions matter more than air temperature. For in-water time, late spring to early autumn is usually the easiest window, with water sometimes reaching about 18°C. Winter brings colder water (around 9°C) and a higher chance of wind and swell, but wildlife watching remains strong. Always check the MetService marine forecast and be ready to swap a boat day for a peninsula hike if seas build.
