Entry Requirements

Australia has standard immigration and biosecurity requirements.

  • Passport and visa: Many visitors need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or visitor visa before arrival. Check Australian Government Home Affairs for your nationality.
  • Biosecurity: Australia enforces strict rules on food, plant, and animal products. Declare items and follow arrival instructions.
  • Minors: If a child is traveling without both parents or guardians, carry the recommended consent documentation.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Small aircraft logistics shape everything.

  • Weight limits: Expect strict luggage limits (commonly 15kg for overnight guests, and lighter limits for day trips). Use soft bags.
  • Dive and snorkel gear: The on-island dive shop hires gear and runs guided dives and courses. Bring personal mask and computer if you prefer.
  • Batteries and chargers: There are no shops on island. Bring spares for torches, camera gear, and charging cables.
  • Rinse and dry: Use designated rinse areas and avoid washing gear directly on the beach.

Practicalities

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Most travelers prepay packages, then use cards for incidentals at gateways and any on-island add-ons. Carry a small amount of cash on the mainland for taxis, snacks, and tips, but do not expect to rely on cash on the island.

There are no ATMs on Lady Elliot Island. Withdraw cash in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Bundaberg, or Hervey Bay before your scenic flight.

Electricity

230V 50Hz I

Australia uses plug type I. Bring an adapter if you are traveling from North America, Europe, or the UK.

Communications

Lady Elliot Island is remote. Expect limited mobile reception and plan to use resort Wi-Fi for essential messages. Download maps, boarding passes, and any medical or travel documents for offline access before you fly out to the island.

Language

English is the primary language. As in much of Australia, you may see acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians and guidance on respectful, low-impact travel.

Insurance

Carry travel insurance that covers weather disruption and small-aircraft schedule changes. Divers and freedivers should add dive accident coverage (such as DAN) that includes chamber treatment and evacuation.
