Guided walls, caves, wreck traces, and quiet coves in Croatia's remote southern Adriatic park
Lastovo's remoteness is both its advantage and its principal risk. Diving should be conservative, guided, and weather-aware, with functioning oxygen on the boat and a clear evacuation route. The island clinic can provide basic and emergency support, while serious trauma or suspected decompression illness may require maritime or air transfer to Dubrovnik or Split, where public facility directories list hyperbaric capability. Conservation rules are strict: do not remove amphorae, wreck material, shells, plants, rocks, or other natural or archaeological objects; do not disturb wildlife; and do not anchor into Posidonia.
Use an authorized local guide and stay within certification, recent experience, gas, and overhead limits. Verify that the boat carries oxygen, first aid, communications, and a workable ladder. On walls, set maximum-depth and gas-turn points before descent. In caverns, caves, or wrecks, remain in open water unless the team has the correct training and equipment. Carry an SMB and know the recall signal. For suspected decompression illness, stop diving, administer the highest available concentration of oxygen, call 112 or 195 for local coordination, and contact DAN Europe. Do not attempt in-water recompression. DAN advises at least 12 hours before flying after one dive and 24 hours after repetitive or decompression diving.
The official tourism page lists an ambulance and clinic at the entrance to Lastovo Town, including a 24-hour emergency contact, but staffing, transport, and published hours should be verified locally. The island pharmacy publishes very limited opening hours and basic stock. Carry all prescription medication and a reserve. There is no verified recompression chamber on Lastovo. Current public facility information identifies hyperbaric capability in Dubrovnik and Split, but the receiving hospital and evacuation mode must be chosen by emergency and diving-medicine professionals, not by a traveler attempting self-transfer.
Open-Adriatic wind and chop
Exposed islets and headlands can become unsuitable even when a protected bay looks calm. Accept site swaps and check DHMZ marine warnings before any private-boat plan.
Blue-water depth creep
Clear water and steep walls can weaken visual depth cues. Set computer alarms, maintain reference to the guide, and do not follow the wall beyond the planned contour.
Overhead environments
An underwater passage is not automatically an open-water swim-through. Cave or wreck interiors require the correct training, gas, equipment, and route briefing.
Remote medical evacuation
The island has basic clinic support but no verified on-island recompression chamber. Serious trauma or diving illness may require coordinated maritime or air evacuation.
A valid park ticket or permit is required where applicable. Do not litter, light fires, camp outside designated areas, collect flora, minerals, geological material, or archaeological objects, or disturb animals. Fishing requires a license and compliance with designated zones; spearfishing with artificial breathing apparatus is prohibited. Private skippers should use park ecological moorings, which are designed to prevent damage to Posidonia meadows. Divers and snorkelers should maintain neutral buoyancy, secure gauges and alternate air sources, avoid touching gorgonians or seagrass, and never publish precise nesting or sensitive-species locations in ways that encourage disturbance.
