- Emergency contact: Emergency Services (112)
- Safety overview: Plan around wind, carry visible signaling, and respect Malta’s marine park rules and cultural heritage protections.
Dive safety
Carry an SMB for every buddy team and a whistle or audible device. Use dive flags where appropriate, especially near boat lanes and lagoons. Choose sheltered entries when NW winds rise. Winter water near 15°C requires thicker exposure protection. Night dives are best in low-traffic coves with clear exits.
Emergency number is 112. The Hyperbaric Unit at Mater Dei Hospital in Msida provides recompression services and diving medical consults. DAN Europe operates a 24-7 multilingual diving medical hotline. Keep both numbers in your phone and dive plan.
Snorkel and freedive safety
NW wind and surge
Majjistral winds can create surge on west-facing sites. Shift to lee-side entries or boat-supported plans.
Boat traffic at lagoons
Use SMBs and floats. Avoid channels and mooring lines around Blue and Crystal Lagoon at peak hours.
Slippery limestone
Wear booties and move carefully on algae-coated entry steps and boulders.
Wildlife and protected areas
At Cirkewwa Marine Park, use installed moorings and follow the code of conduct. On protected heritage wrecks, access is through licensed operators and contact is prohibited. Spearfishing with scuba is banned and restrictions apply to freedivers in designated zones. Follow a no-touch, no-take ethic across all sites.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when nw wind and surge. Confirm local briefings before committing.
