Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport (MIR)
  • Typical transfer: 7 km rail or road transfer
  • Entry requirement: Entry rules depend on nationality, so verify with an official Tunisian embassy or consular source before travel.
  • Getting around: Monastir is the easier carfree base.

Getting There

Most travelers should fly into Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport and decide from there whether to stay nearby in Monastir or continue south to Mahdia. Monastir town is close enough for a simple first-night stay. Mahdia is farther but still straightforward by private transfer, taxi, or rail connection via the coastal line.

The main arrival airport for this destination, serving Monastir and the Sahel resort coast. Airport services include check-in support, security guidance, parking, and on-site Wi-Fi information.

Getting Around

Monastir is the easier car-free base. The rail connection links Monastir, the airport station, and Mahdia, making point-to-point moves realistic without a rental car. For dive days with early gear loads, taxis or pre-arranged transfers are more comfortable. Louages and taxis work well for simple regional hops; rental cars are only necessary if you want inland autonomy or multiple independent day trips.

Entry Requirements

Entry rules depend on nationality, so verify with an official Tunisian embassy or consular source before travel. A passport with at least 6 months validity is the safest planning assumption for most travelers, and proof of onward or return travel may be requested. Keep travel insurance details and hotel confirmation easy to show on arrival.

Gear Logistics Checklist

This is a forgiving destination for gear logistics compared with more remote dive trips. The main issue is not access but transfer comfort and site-specific planning. If you are basing in Mahdia, ask whether the operator offers hotel pickup and whether deep wreck days require extra kit or earlier departure. Bring your own mask, computer, and SMB if these matter to your safety margin.

Practicalities

Currency

Tunisian Dinar (TND)

Cash still matters. Cards are accepted in many hotels, larger restaurants, and some tourism businesses, but smaller shops, taxis, and lower-friction local purchases often run better in dinar.

ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas such as Monastir and Mahdia. Foreign cards are commonly accepted, though fees can apply and limits vary by bank and machine.

Electricity

230V 50Hz C, E

Most European chargers work normally. Travelers from 110V countries should check whether devices are dual-voltage before plugging in.

Communications

Tourist-zone connectivity is usually adequate for maps, bookings, and messaging. Airport Wi-Fi information is published by Monastir airport. For consistent data, an eSIM or local SIM is the easiest solution if you plan to move between Monastir, Mahdia, and inland sites.

Language

Arabic is the national language, French is widely useful, and English is common in tourism but not universal. Basic French phrases help with taxis, cafés, and smaller local businesses.

Insurance

Carry standard travel insurance plus dive-specific cover if you will be scuba diving, especially for wreck diving. Save your policy number, emergency phone line, and DAN contact details offline before the trip.

Packing list

Bring a 3mm suit for peak summer and consider 5mm outside the warmest months. Add a wind layer for boat rides, reef-safe sun protection, dry bag, hat, your own mask, and an SMB if you are diving independently of house-kit assumptions.
