When To Go

Season planner for Peniche and Berlengas

Peniche and Berlengas are driven by Atlantic patterns: summer has the most reliable crossings and the warmest water, but upwelling can cool things quickly and wind often strengthens later in the day. June to October is the main window for consistent dive and snorkel operations, with water commonly 16°C to 20°C. Outside that window, you can still visit and sometimes dive, but you plan around swell and accept that some days are blown out, especially in mid-winter.

Ideal: Most reliable island crossings, longest days, and water commonly 16°C to 20°C. Afternoon northerly winds can reach 25.0 kph on exposed days.

Plan Carefully: More frequent Atlantic swell and storms. Expect cancellations for Berlengas boats and limited offshore windows. Water often sits near 14°C to 15°C.

If your trip is islandfocused, build in at least one buffer day.

Ideal: Best blend of sea state and water temperature. Expect 16°C to 20°C with the most consistent access to Berlengas wrecks and caves.

Plan Carefully: Diving only when possible, with higher cancellation risk. Cold water and more surge on rock and wreck structure.

High season water temperature guidance often points to 7mm suits.

Ideal: Best shot at calm bay sessions and clearer surface conditions. Still plan for wind and swell shifts.

Plan Carefully: Cold water and frequent surge. Only plan short, conservative sessions in the most sheltered areas.

If you need line depth progression, schedule training during the calmest forecast window and keep a scuba or topside backup plan.

Ideal: Warmest water and the best chance of calm coves. Wear a wetsuit even in summer.

Plan Carefully: Cold water, higher swell, and fewer reliable snorkel windows. Consider mainland coastal walks and museums instead.

Snorkel success is highly seastate dependent.

Ideal: Best weather for coastal hikes, viewpoints, and island day trips. Summer afternoons can be windy.

Plan Carefully: More rain and wind. Great for museums, long lunches, and storm-watching, but check sea conditions before committing to boats.

March often aligns with major surf competition windows at Supertubos, which can raise lodging demand and create a festival atmosphere.
