Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Perth Airport (PER)
  • Typical transfer: 15 km to 20 km by train, taxi or rideshare
  • Entry requirement: Australia requires a valid passport and the correct visa or travel authority for your nationality and trip purpose.
  • Getting around: Perth: Public transport is run by Transperth (trains, buses, and ferries on the Swan River).

Getting There

Most international and domestic travelers route through Perth Airport (PER). From Perth or Fremantle, Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is a straightforward ferry day trip, and many dive charters also depart from Fremantle.

Fast-ferry routes typically run:

  • Fremantle to Rottnest (Thomson Bay Jetty): about 25-30 minutes depending on operator and departure point.
  • Hillarys Boat Harbour to Rottnest: about 45 minutes.
  • Perth CBD (Barrack Street Jetty) to Rottnest: up to about 90 minutes.

In peak summer and on major event days, ferries sell out early. If Rottnest is a "must", lock transport first and build the rest of your itinerary around it.

Airports

1

Perth Airport

PER • YPPH

15 km • 15 km to 20 km by train, taxi or rideshare

Western Australia's main international and domestic gateway. Perth Airport connects to the CBD via public transport (train and bus) and is the typical arrival point for trips combining Perth beaches with Rottnest Island day trips.

Transport: Airport Line train (Transperth), Public buses, Taxi and rideshare, Car rental

2

Rottnest Island Airport

RTS • YRTI

2 km • 2 km shuttle or bike to the settlement

A small island airport used for charter and scenic flights. It can be a time-saver for some itineraries, but ferries are the most common and flexible option for most visitors.

Transport: Island bus, Bike or e-bike hire, Walk (luggage dependent)

Getting Around

Perth:

  • Public transport is run by Transperth (trains, buses, and ferries on the Swan River). The Airport Line links Perth Airport stations to the city network.
  • Rideshare and taxis are widely available; rental cars are useful if you want to add day trips outside the metro area.

Rottnest Island:

  • The island is effectively car-free for visitors. Get around by bike, e-bike, walking, or the Island Explorer bus.
  • If you are planning multiple snorkel bays, bike hire is usually the most time-efficient option.

Entry Requirements

Australia requires a valid passport and the correct visa or travel authority for your nationality and trip purpose. Many short-stay visitors use the Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651), while others may need a Visitor visa (subclass 600). Check the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs for the most current requirements and application process.

Biosecurity is strict. Declare food, plant and animal products, and outdoor gear that may carry soil or organic material.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • For Rottnest day trips, consider hiring snorkel gear and wetsuits on the island if you do not want to carry everything on the ferry.
  • Many Rottnest dive charters include tanks and weights. Confirm inclusions before you pack heavy.
  • For mainland shore dives, bring booties and plan a secure place for valuables. Coogee entry points can be busy in summer, so arrive early.
  • Use a dry bag for ferry crossings, and keep a wind layer handy even on warm days.
  • If you are flying onward after diving, follow standard no-fly-after-diving guidance and build a buffer day into your plan.

Practicalities

Currency

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted across Perth, Fremantle and Rottnest. Keep a small amount of cash for small kiosks, tips in exceptional service situations, and backup transport needs.

ATMs are easy to find in Perth and Fremantle. On Rottnest, options are more limited, so withdraw cash on the mainland if you prefer paying in cash.

Electricity

230V 50Hz I

Australia uses Type I plugs. Most modern chargers are dual-voltage, but check your device before plugging in.

Communications

Perth has strong 4G and 5G coverage with major carriers. Rottnest has coverage around the settlement and many popular bays, but speeds can vary with crowds and remote corners of the island. If you need always-on navigation or emergency contact, download offline maps and keep a backup power bank.

Language

English is the primary language. You will also see Noongar place names and references, including Wadjemup as the Noongar name for Rottnest Island.

Insurance

Carry travel insurance that covers adventure activities and medical evacuation, and add dive-specific coverage if you scuba dive. DAN (Divers Alert Network) is commonly used by traveling divers. If you plan to hire vehicles or e-bikes, confirm liability coverage and read the rental terms.

Packing list

Water and exposure:

  • Summer water can be comfortable in a 3-5mm wetsuit for diving and a shorty or top for snorkeling.
  • Winter water drops toward 18°C and many divers prefer 5-7mm plus a hood.
  • Bring booties for shore entries (Coogee and rocky Rottnest edges).

Sun and wind:

  • High-SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a hat.
  • A windbreaker for ferry crossings and post-swim bike rides.

Safety and convenience:

  • Dry bag for phone and valuables.
  • SMB for divers and a bright float for snorkelers.
  • Reusable water bottle and snacks for long bike loops.
