When to go

Best time to visit Ponta Delgada & Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel has a temperate maritime climate with relatively small swings in temperature but big swings in wind, swell and cloud cover.

Best overall window

May to October

Warmest water around 20°C to 23°C, longer daylight, most reliable seas and active whalewatching season, but also the highest prices and busiest viewpoints.

Outside that window

Stormier Atlantic conditions, bigger swell and shorter days. Some operators scale back or pause offshore trips, and shore access can be limited by waves, but keen divers can still score good days between fronts.

Choose your trip style

Start with the overall answer, then switch only when scuba, freedive, snorkel, or topside timing changes the trip in a meaningful way.

  • Blue and fin whale migration

    Best for Scuba, Topside

    Mar to May

During spring, nutrientrich upwelling draws blue and fin whales past the Azores.

  • Resident sperm whales and dolphins

    Best for Scuba, Snorkel, Topside

    Apr to Sep

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Sperm whales and several dolphin species are present around Sao Miguel much of the year, with higher sighting probabilities from spring through early autumn.

  • Devil ray and pelagic season at seamounts

    Best for Scuba, Freedive

    Jul to Oct

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Warm, stable summer seas bring better odds of encountering mobula rays, tuna, barracuda and the occasional shark at offshore seamounts like Formigas, Dollabarat and Dom Joao de Castro.

  • Winter storm swell and big surf

    Best for Topside

    Dec to Feb

    JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

Heavy Atlantic swell in winter creates dramatic surf and limits water access, especially along exposed north and west coasts.

Always true for this destination
  • If you want both whales and warmer water, aim for late May through July: early in this window you have more chance of blue and fin whales, while later months add devil rays and sharks at offshore seamounts.
Seasonal cautions
  • Apr to May, Oct: Slightly cooler water and air, more changeable weather and fewer crowds. Great for combining diving with hiking and hot springs if you are flexible around offshore trip cancellations.
  • Nov to Mar: Stormier Atlantic conditions, bigger swell and shorter days. Some operators scale back or pause offshore trips, and shore access can be limited by waves, but keen divers can still score good days between fronts.
