When To Go

Season planner for Ponta Delgada & Sao Miguel

Sao Miguel has a temperate maritime climate with relatively small swings in temperature but big swings in wind, swell and cloud cover. Winter brings more storms, rain and big Atlantic swell, which can limit dive operations and shore entries. Late spring through early autumn offers the best combination of calmer seas, warmer water and whale activity, with offshore seamount trips clustering in the most stable weeks of summer. Tourism peaks from June to early September, especially in August.

Ideal: Warmest water around 20°C to 23°C, longer daylight, most reliable seas and active whale-watching season, but also the highest prices and busiest viewpoints.

Plan Carefully: Stormier Atlantic conditions, bigger swell and shorter days. Some operators scale back or pause offshore trips, and shore access can be limited by waves, but keen divers can still score good days between fronts.

If you want both whales and warmer water, aim for late May through July: early in this window you have more chance of blue and fin whales, while later months add devil rays and sharks at offshore seamounts.

Ideal: Most reliable boat conditions, warmest water and highest chance of offshore trips to Formigas and Banco Dollabarat, with pelagics and devil rays in season. Booking early is essential for August weekends.

If offshore seamounts are a top priority, give yourself at least four or five full days on the island in prime season to increase the odds of a good weather window.

Ideal: Warmest water and most stable seas mean longer sessions, better comfort on line training and a greater chance to add wreck or canyon dives between practice sets.

Freedive courses often run in defined blocks; align your trip with scheduled AIDA courses or coaching camps when possible.

Ideal: Warmest sea temperatures, frequent ferry operations to Vila Franca's islet and lifeguards at major beaches and pools. Also the busiest time, so book ferries early and expect more people at popular spots.

Plan Carefully: Cool water, stronger swell and more frequent storms make unguided snorkeling challenging and sometimes unsafe. Focus on guided tours that can pick sheltered spots or pivot to land-based activities when conditions are poor.

Because many of the best snorkel sites are rocky and exposed, even summer days can be redflagged.

Ideal: Comfortable temperatures, relatively green landscapes and fewer foggy days at crater rims than in winter, with more space at viewpoints than high summer.

Plan Carefully: Cooler, wetter, windier, with more fog at high viewpoints. Excellent for hot springs, food and culture days, but hiking plans should stay flexible and weather aware.

Winter and shoulder seasons are ideal for travelers seeking a quieter, more local feel, especially if craterlake views are a nicetohave rather than a mustsee on every single day.

During spring, nutrient-rich upwelling draws blue and fin whales past the Azores. Dedicated whale-watching trips from Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo may encounter these giants alongside common dolphins, and divers often combine morning cetacean tours with afternoon reef dives in this window.

Sperm whales and several dolphin species are present around Sao Miguel much of the year, with higher sighting probabilities from spring through early autumn. Trips operate under strict approach rules that keep swimmers and boats at respectful distances, so plan to watch from the boat rather than expecting in-water encounters.

Warm, stable summer seas bring better odds of encountering mobula rays, tuna, barracuda and the occasional shark at offshore seamounts like Formigas, Dollabarat and Dom Joao de Castro. Operators follow Azores guidelines for shark diving and pelagic interaction, emphasizing safety and low-impact behavior.

Heavy Atlantic swell in winter creates dramatic surf and limits water access, especially along exposed north and west coasts. While this can be visually spectacular from clifftop viewpoints, divers and snorkelers should treat these months as highly weather dependent and favor guided coastal walks or hot springs on rough days.
