Overview

Sacred culture, vanilla-scented motu, pass dives, and coral-garden drifts in one shared lagoon

Raiatea and Taha'a are the Society Islands' quieter twin-lagoon answer to Bora Bora. Raiatea brings the logistics, marina life, dive centers, Faaroa River, and the UNESCO-listed Taputapuatea cultural landscape. Taha'a brings motu beaches, vanilla farms, pearl farms, rum distilleries, and the famous Tautau Coral Garden drift snorkel. Underwater, the destination is land-based and local-operator focused: day boats run to the Nordby wreck, Te Ava Piti, Miri Miri, Tiva Pass, Ceran Pass, and sheltered lagoon gardens. It suits divers who like small boats, mixed reef and pass profiles, strong Polynesian culture, and non-diver-friendly excursions. Diving is possible year-round, but May to October is the easiest overall planning window for dry weather, lower humidity, and better topside comfort.

What Makes It Special

  • One lagoon, two island personalities

Raiatea is the cultural and logistical hub; Taha'a is the vanilla island with motu, farms, and quiet lagoon resorts.

  • Small-operator diving

Local centers such as Hemisphere Sub, Te Mara Nui, and Taha'a Diving make the destination feel personal, flexible, and site-by-site rather than mass-market.

  • Wreck plus passes

The Nordby wreck, Te Ava Piti, Miri Miri, Tiva, and Ceran provide a mix of wreck, drift, coral wall, and shark-and-ray potential.

  • Exceptional snorkel day trips

Taha'a Coral Garden, motu picnics, vanilla farms, rum distilleries, and pearl farms are easy to combine on one lagoon excursion.
