Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Sultan Mahmud Airport, Kuala Terengganu (TGG)
  • Typical transfer: 30 km drive
  • Entry requirement: Passport validity rules and visa requirements depend on nationality.
  • Getting around: On the islands, movement is mostly by resort shuttle, short taxi rides (Redang), or by boat.

Getting There

Most travelers reach Redang and Lang Tengah via Kuala Terengganu (TGG) on the mainland, then transfer to Merang Jetty for speedboats to the islands.

Common routing options:

  • Option A (most common): Fly into Kuala Terengganu (TGG), then take a 30 km drive to Merang Jetty and a speedboat to Redang or Lang Tengah.
  • Option B (seasonal): Use a direct or package-linked flight into Redang (RDN), then take a resort shuttle to your beach area.

Practical tips:

  • Boat departures are scheduled and can sell out in peak season. Confirm your jetty and departure time in advance.
  • Build buffer time if you are connecting flights to a fixed boat schedule.
  • During Northeast Monsoon months (roughly Nov - Feb), transfers may be delayed or canceled and many island resorts close.

Airports

1

Sultan Mahmud Airport, Kuala Terengganu

TGG • WMKN

30 km • 30 km drive

Primary gateway for Merang Jetty transfers to Redang and Lang Tengah. Expect frequent domestic connections from Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian cities.

Transport: Pre-booked taxi or van to Merang Jetty, Resort transfer, Public bus (limited schedules)

2

Redang Airport (Pulau Redang STOLport)

RDN • WMPR

15 km • 15 km drive

Small airport on Redang used for limited and often seasonal services (commonly via Berjaya Air on resort-linked schedules). A convenient option if your dates align.

Transport: Resort shuttle (common), Pre-arranged pickup

3

Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang)

SZB • WMSA

350 km • 350 km connection (air + ground)

Useful if you are taking a direct or package-linked flight to Redang (RDN). Also convenient for domestic connections because it is close to central Kuala Lumpur.

Transport: Direct/charter flight to RDN (seasonal), Connect via TGG and Merang Jetty

Getting Around

On the islands, movement is mostly by resort shuttle, short taxi rides (Redang), or by boat. There is no rideshare and very limited public transport. Plan activities through your resort or dive center.

On the mainland (Kuala Terengganu and Merang), taxis and pre-booked vans are the simplest way to connect airport, town, and jetty.

Entry Requirements

  • Passport validity rules and visa requirements depend on nationality. Check official Malaysian immigration guidance for your passport.
  • Most foreign visitors are required to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within 3 days prior to arrival.
  • Keep proof of onward travel and accommodation details accessible.
  • For domestic transfers, carry the same passport used for international entry.
  • If you are bringing specialized dive equipment, keep batteries and computers in carry-on where possible and protect them from moisture during boat transfers.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Boat transfers: pack valuables and electronics in a dry bag and expect spray.
  • Flights into RDN can have strict luggage limits on small aircraft. Prioritize essentials (mask, computer, regulator) in carry-on.
  • Rental gear is available at resorts, but sizes and specialty items (long freedive fins, camera arms, tech gear) are limited.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and avoid bringing single-use plastics where possible.

Practicalities

Currency

Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)

Resorts usually accept cards, but cash is still useful for marine park fees, small purchases, and tips. On smaller islands, card terminals can go offline, so do not depend on tap-to-pay for everything.

Plan to withdraw cash on the mainland (Kuala Terengganu or at TGG). ATMs may be limited or unreliable on the islands, and Lang Tengah can feel cash-only outside resort billing.

Electricity

230V 50Hz G

Malaysia uses the UK-style Type G plug. Bring an adapter if you are coming from North America, Europe, or Australia.

Communications

Mobile coverage is generally workable near resort areas but can be patchy across bays and trails. Most resorts provide Wi-Fi, but speeds vary and storms can cause outages. Consider downloading offline maps and keeping important documents available offline.

Language

Bahasa Malaysia is the national language. English is commonly spoken in resorts and dive centers. Learning a few basics (Terima kasih = thank you) goes a long way.

Insurance

Carry travel medical coverage that includes water activities. Divers should have dive accident insurance that covers evacuation and hyperbaric treatment. Confirm your policy's maximum depth, training limits, and coverage for boat transfers and domestic flights.
