Overview
Salento rewards divers who treat Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca as complementary bases. Otranto brings Adriatic walls, grottoes, historic anchors, amphora traces, and sites such as Taglio delle Orte and La Palombara. Leuca adds luminous sea caves, canyon-like rock formations, a recreational wreck, and advanced profiles at Punta Meliso and Secca del Pisello. Most diving is organized from local centers by day boat, with training and technical support available. Late spring and early autumn give the best balance of comfortable weather, dependable departures, and lighter crowds. July and August have the warmest water but require early starts and advance booking. Non-divers can combine Otranto's old town, Leuca's lighthouse and sanctuary, cave cruises, coastal walks, Castro, and Lecce.
A single trip can combine Otranto's Adriatic walls and maritime history with Leuca's cape caves, canyons, wrecks, and deeper current-exposed terrain.
