Getting There

Fly into Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE), then take a 15 km-equivalent domestic flight to San Pedro (SPR) with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, or transfer by taxi to the water-taxi terminal for a 75 km-90 km ferry. Morning and early afternoon offer the most departure choices. Keep one buffer day if planning atoll trips.

Getting Around

San Pedro moves by golf cart, bicycle, and taxis. Many rentals include the north-bridge pass sticker. There is no rideshare service. Roads north and south of town are paved in sections with speed humps; drive slowly at night.

Entry Requirements

Most visitors receive 30 days on arrival. Passport must be valid at least for the stay and you should carry a return ticket and funds. U.S. citizens do not require a visa for stays of 30 days or less. Departure taxes for air travel are typically included in your ticket.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • Aluminum 80s with yoke valves are standard. Bring a DIN-to-yoke adapter.
  • Nitrox is widely available for wall dives.
  • Reserve Blue Hole and Turneffe trips early and verify minimum numbers.
  • Freedivers should arrange private charters for safety cover and space.
  • Pack soft gear in mesh bags. Rinse stations and lockers are common on larger docks.

Pegged at BZ$2 = USD $1. USD is widely accepted with change often in BZD. Bring small bills for tips and fees.

ATMs cluster in San Pedro Town near banks and supermarkets. Per-transaction limits vary; expect roughly BZ$500-BZ$1000 per withdrawal.

Most hotels and rentals provide US-style sockets. Some properties use 220V in select outlets; carry dual-voltage chargers.

Communications

Local carriers Digi and Smart cover Ambergris with 4G/LTE. Digi offers eSIM at shops and online. International eSIM apps also work. Wi-Fi is common in hotels and cafes. WhatsApp is the default for operators and taxis.

Language

English is the official language. Spanish and Belizean Kriol are widely spoken in San Pedro.

Insurance

Comprehensive travel and dive insurance is strongly advised. Verify emergency evacuation coverage to Belize City and chamber treatment benefits.
