Safety And Conservation

Santa Maria is an Atlantic destination. The reward is clear blue-water days and dramatic volcanic structure, but the cost is exposure: swell, current, and remote evacuation realities. Dive conservatively, stay flexible, and treat offshore sites as optional weather windows. Conservation is central in the Azores: the official diving code of conduct emphasizes buoyancy control, no-touch interactions, and leaving nothing behind.

Top Risks

  • Primary risk: Atlantic swell and surge
  • Secondary risk: Strong currents on offshore banks
  • Emergency contact: Emergency number (112)
  • Safety overview: Santa Maria is an Atlantic destination.

Dive safety

Practical Dive Safety

  • Carry a surface marker buoy and know how to deploy it from depth.
  • Expect surge and variable current. If you are uncomfortable with drift procedures, stay inshore.
  • Keep conservative profiles on offshore days. Long boat rides and remote access are not the place for pushing NDLs.
  • Treat caves as overhead environments. Stay in the light zone unless trained and properly equipped.

Decompression Sickness First Response

Official Azores diving guidance recommends:

  • If the diver is conscious, give fluids (preferably water) and supply 100% oxygen at a flow rate of 15 litres/min.
  • Transfer the diver to the nearest hyperbaric chamber without interrupting oxygen.
  • Keep the diver horizontal if conscious, or in the recovery position if unconscious, and always protect the airway.
  • Call emergency services (112) immediately and follow instructions.

The Azores Scuba Diving official tourism site states that the Eastern Group has a hyperbaric chamber on Sao Miguel that also serves Santa Maria. The chamber is located at Divino Espirito Santo Hospital in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel). In an emergency, activation is coordinated through emergency services (112) and evacuation may be by sea or air depending on conditions. Consider the reality of distance and weather when planning offshore dives and always dive conservatively.

Snorkel and freedive safety

  • Atlantic swell and surge

Even with clear skies, swell can make entries, exits, and cave areas uncomfortable. If you see whitewater, choose a sheltered site or go topside.

  • Strong currents on offshore banks

Formigas and Banco Dollabarat are exposed. Expect drift procedures, negative entries, and the need for an SMB. Do not force it on marginal days.

  • Overhead environments

Caves and swimthroughs are overhead. Stay in the light zone unless trained, and always carry appropriate lights and redundancy.

  • Remote evacuation reality

Santa Maria is small and offshore sites are far from medical support. Dive conservatively and plan for potential sea/air evacuation in an emergency.

Wildlife and protected areas

Azores Responsible Diving Basics

The official Azores Diving Code of Conduct includes practical conservation rules:

  • Do not throw anything overboard and use proper waste containers.
  • Secure gauges and alternate air sources so they do not drag and damage the seafloor.
  • Control buoyancy and fin movement, and avoid touching fragile fixed organisms.
  • Avoid touching, using, eating, or moving sea creatures.
  • Do not disturb animals in their hideouts.
  • Respect underwater cultural heritage and do not remove artifacts.
  • Do not take souvenirs from the seafloor. Take photos and leave only bubbles.

Protected Areas Around Santa Maria

Azores government listings identify multiple protected marine areas around Santa Maria, including the Reserva Natural dos Ilheus das Formigas and additional Santa Maria coastal protected zones. Treat protected areas as higher-standard sites: follow all operator briefings, do not collect anything, and avoid any behavior that changes animal behavior.

Do Not Do This

Avoid entering when atlantic swell and surge. Confirm local briefings before committing.
