When To Go

Season planner for The Sardine Run (Wild Coast)

The Wild Coast Sardine Run is a winter event driven by cold-water movement along the eastern seaboard. Plan your core expedition for June to July around Port St Johns, with May and August as possible shoulder months. Expect water in the 14°C to 20°C range, windier mornings, and sea days lost to swell. Outside winter, the coast is warmer and greener, but the sardine migration is usually absent, so trips shift to topside exploring or to more consistent dive regions in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ideal: Best odds of bait balls. Water often 14°C to 18°C with wind and swell that can cancel days.

Plan Carefully: Warmer coast but the sardine migration is usually absent. Better for hiking, beaches, and add-on diving elsewhere.

If the Sardine Run is your main goal, prioritize June to July and book extra ocean days.

Ideal: Highest success rates for bait balls. Expect cold water 14°C to 18°C and visibility often 3 m to 15 m.

Plan Carefully: Not a Sardine Run scuba season. Choose Aliwal Shoal or Protea Banks for shark diving, reefs, and wrecks.

Scuba success is about time on task.

Ideal: Best shallow action when bait balls sit high in the water column. Cold water and wind chill are real.

Plan Carefully: No reliable Sardine Run freediving. Use this window for training, line sessions, or travel to warmer freedive destinations.

Freedivers often get the best moments when the action is fast and shallow, but safety margins must increase in rough seas.

Ideal: Best chance of offshore surface bait balls, but conditions can be cold (14°C to 18°C) and choppy.

Plan Carefully: No Sardine Run snorkeling. For casual swims, target sheltered bays, low swell, and warm days, especially in mid-summer.

Offshore snorkeling is only for strong swimmers.
