Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Savusavu Airport (SVU)
  • Typical transfer: 10 to 20 minutesute drive to most town and bay stays
  • Entry requirement: Fiji visitors generally need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, an onward or return ticket, a confirmed accommodation address, and a completed arrival card.
  • Getting around: Savusavu town is compact and walkable, while resorts, dive centers, gardens, waterfalls, and the airport usually require taxis, resort transfers, rental cars, or arranged pickups.

Getting There

Most visitors reach Savusavu by flying internationally into Nadi, then taking a domestic Fiji Link connection to Savusavu Airport. Some itineraries use Suva as the domestic connection point, or fly to Labasa and transfer by road across Vanua Levu. Ferry options exist from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu, but they are slower, more weather-sensitive, and better for budget travelers with time than for dive travelers carrying tight schedules and heavy gear. Liveaboard guests may board elsewhere in Fiji and visit Namena as part of a broader route.

Getting Around

Savusavu town is compact and walkable, while resorts, dive centers, gardens, waterfalls, and the airport usually require taxis, resort transfers, rental cars, or arranged pickups. There is no rideshare-style system to rely on. For rainforest, waterfall, or village outings, book local transport through your accommodation or guide because road quality, rain, and return timing matter.

Entry Requirements

Fiji visitors generally need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, an onward or return ticket, a confirmed accommodation address, and a completed arrival card. Visa-exempt visitors can receive a visitor permit on arrival for tourism stays within the published limit. Requirements can change, so confirm with Fiji's official travel requirements and your airline before departure.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Ask domestic carriers about baggage weight before packing scuba gear, freedive fins, or camera housings. Put fragile and essential items in carry-on where allowed. Savusavu dive operators and resorts can supply tanks, weights, rental gear, fills, and instruction, but advanced divers should bring their own SMB, computer, mask, exposure suit, and any critical spares. Long freedive fins may be awkward on domestic aircraft, so confirm bags early. Rinse and dry gear well before domestic transfers because small aircraft and ferries are not kind to wet bags.

Practicalities

Currency

Fijian Dollar (FJD)

Use Fijian dollars for taxis, markets, small village fees, snacks, and local tips. Cards are common at resorts, larger tour desks, and some restaurants, but do not assume every boat, waterfall guide, or small vendor can take them.

ATMs and banks are concentrated in Savusavu town and larger centers such as Labasa and Nadi. Withdraw before remote transfers, Namena boat days, village visits, and ferry travel because offshore and inland options are limited.

Electricity

240V 50Hz I

Bring a Type I adapter and make sure chargers are dual voltage. Resorts may have limited charging points, so photographers should pack a compact power strip and dry charging station.

Communications

Vodafone and Digicel serve Fiji, with tourist SIM options and registration requirements. Savusavu town has kiosks and better coverage than remote reefs, inland valleys, or offshore Namena. Download maps, operator details, ferry or flight confirmations, and emergency numbers before boat days.

Language

English is widely used in tourism, while Fijian and Fiji Hindi are part of daily life. Learn simple greetings such as Bula and Vinaka, ask before taking photos in villages, and dress modestly for cultural or waterfall visits. A sulu or cover-up is useful.

Insurance

Buy travel insurance that covers scuba, freediving if applicable, trip interruption, cyclone disruption, medevac, and remote-island evacuation. DAN or similar dive-specific coverage is strongly recommended because Namena and Vanua Levu are remote from Fiji's listed hyperbaric referral facility.

Packing list

Pack an SMB, computer, mask, reef-safe sun protection, 3mm wetsuit or full Lycra suit, rain shell, dry bag, mosquito repellent, motion-sickness medication, prescription medicines, spare mask strap, camera o-rings, and modest village clothing. Do not pack gloves for Namena dives because the reserve rules prohibit them.
