Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Tabarka-Ain Draham International Airport (TBJ)
  • Typical transfer: 15 km drive
  • Entry requirement: Carry a valid passport and check visa rules against your nationality before booking.
  • Getting around: A rental car is the best fit if you want to mix Tabarka with Ain Draham, Hammam Bourguiba, or archaeology.

Getting There

Most international travelers reach Tabarka either by flying into Tunis-Carthage and continuing by road, or by connecting onward to Tabarka-Ain Draham when domestic schedules line up. Tunisair Express lists Tabarka among the Tunisian airports it serves, and publishes the Tunis to Tabarka flight at about 30 minutes. By road from the Tunis area, expect roughly 180 km to the coast. Once in Tabarka, the marina is the operational heart for dive departures. La Galite is not an independent hop-on ferry destination for most travelers. Access is usually through licensed dive or excursion boats from Tabarka, and those crossings are long and weather-led.

Getting Around

A rental car is the best fit if you want to mix Tabarka with Ain Draham, Hammam Bourguiba, or archaeology. Taxis are useful for short town runs and airport transfers, but they are not the ideal tool for a multi-stop activity itinerary. Around the marina, most dive logistics are walkable once you are based in town or in a seafront resort. For early departures, ask your operator or hotel to confirm the exact pickup point the night before.

Entry Requirements

Carry a valid passport and check visa rules against your nationality before booking. Official Tunisia tourism guidance states that the old option for many EU travelers to enter on a national identity card ended on January 1, 2025, so passport-based advice is the safe default. Also confirm airline transit rules, accommodation proof, and onward-travel requirements before departure. For La Galite, visitors normally rely on licensed operators to handle the practical access side of a protected-area trip rather than trying to organize independent boat permissions themselves.

Gear Logistics Checklist

  • If you route through Tunis, assume your gear will travel more smoothly than if you depend on tight same-day domestic transfers.
  • Plan to rent cylinders and weights locally, but bring your own computer, mask, DSMB or SMB, torch, save-a-dive spares, and exposure protection that matches the season.
  • For La Galite, pack seasickness medication, a dry bag, sun cover, and extra drinking water because the crossing is long.
  • Ask in advance whether your operator can supply nitrox, rental suits in your size, and boat snacks or lunch on long days.

Practicalities

Currency

Tunisian Dinar (TND)

Tunisia uses the Tunisian dinar, and official tourism guidance describes it as a closed currency. Larger hotels, resorts, and some tourism businesses accept cards, but cash is still useful for taxis, marina cafes, small shops, and incidental port payments.

ATMs are available in Tabarka town, at larger hotels, and at major airports, but you should not expect easy cash access once you leave for long sea days or inland detours. Machines dispense dinars, and per-transaction limits can be a few hundred dinars depending on bank and card.

Electricity

230V 50Hz C, E

Tunisia uses standard European-style plugs. A compact adapter and a multi-port charger are enough for most dive and camera setups.

Communications

Mobile coverage is generally fine in Tabarka town and the hotel zone, but it becomes less predictable on forest roads and can disappear entirely during offshore crossings to La Galite. Buy a local SIM or arrange an eSIM before leaving Tunis if data matters to your navigation or work. Do not count on reliable signal for emergency internet calling once you are well offshore.

Language

Arabic is the official language, and French is widely used in daily life, tourism, and many administrative interactions. Official Tunisia tourism information also notes that English is used in tourist areas, but French will usually get you farther in ports, hospitals, and inland stops. Learning a few basic French phrases is genuinely helpful here.

Insurance

Carry dive insurance with evacuation support, especially if La Galite is on the plan. DAN-style coverage is strongly recommended because the destination involves boat diving, longer offshore days, and uncertain local chamber visibility in public sources. Also remember that medical providers in Tunisia can ask for payment up front, so general travel insurance still matters even if you already have dive-specific cover.

Packing list

  • 5mm wetsuit for spring, autumn, and most multi-dive shoulder-season trips
  • 3mm suit or shorty for warmest summer snorkeling or diving
  • SMB or DSMB, torch, booties, and save-a-dive spares
  • Rashguard, hat, polarized sunglasses, and strong sun protection
  • Windproof layer for marina mornings and long boat rides
  • Seasickness medication for anyone attempting La Galite
  • Walking shoes and a light fleece for Ain Draham or Hammam Bourguiba days
  • European plug adapter, dry bag, and some backup cash in dinars
