When To Go

Season planner for Tasman Peninsula (Eaglehawk Neck)

Tasman Peninsula is a true four-season, Southern Ocean coastline. For water time, the most comfortable window is mid-summer to early autumn, when water is at its warmest (often 16°C to 18°C) and long daylight makes it easier to wait out weather. Winter brings colder water (often near 12°C) and more frequent swell, so offshore boat dives and cave entries become more selective. Wildlife timing is a bonus: humpback and southern right whales are regularly sighted off Tasmania between May and December, and seal activity is common around rocky haul-outs year-round.

Ideal: Longest daylight for cape walks and cruise departures. Warm afternoons but still windy at lookouts.

Plan Carefully: Short days, higher chance of rain and strong winds. Prioritize Port Arthur, short lookouts, and flexible walk timing.

Multiday walks like the Three Capes Track require bookings and operate yearround, but winter is a different experience: colder, wilder, and quieter.
