Safety And Conservation
Zakynthos is generally straightforward for guided diving and snorkeling, but the key risks are surface traffic, heat, cave complacency, wind-exposed routes, and wildlife disturbance. Conservation rules are not optional: the south coast is a working turtle-protection landscape.
Top Risks
- Primary risk: Turtle nesting beach rules
- Secondary risk: Do not chase turtles
- Emergency contact: European Emergency Number (112)
- Safety overview: Zakynthos is generally straightforward for guided diving and snorkeling, but the key risks are surface traffic, heat, cave complacency, windexposed routes, and wildlife disturbance.
Dive safety
Dive mornings are usually easiest before wind and boat traffic build. Carry a DSMB, use a computer, keep profiles conservative, and avoid flying for at least 18 to 24 hours after diving based on your dive schedule and agency guidance. For caves and swim-throughs, use a trained guide, torch, and good buoyancy, and never enter overhead environments beyond your training. Ask each operator about oxygen, radio or phone coverage, evacuation route, and nearest appropriate hyperbaric plan.
Zakynthos General Hospital Agios Dionysios is the island's public hospital, with private clinics in resort areas for minor urgent care. In a life-threatening emergency call 112 first; for sea emergencies use 108; for suspected DCI, give oxygen if trained, keep the diver hydrated and supine unless breathing issues require otherwise, and contact DAN Europe or your dive insurer for hyperbaric triage and evacuation coordination. Confirm current chamber arrangements with your operator before diving.
Snorkel and freedive safety
Turtle nesting beach rules
Nesting beaches are not normal resort beaches. Visit only during permitted hours, keep activity close to the waterline, avoid dogs and vehicles, and never touch nests or hatchlings.
Do not chase turtles
In the marine park, keep respectful distance from turtles. Do not approach head-on, block surfacing animals, crowd them with multiple swimmers, feed them, or touch them.
Boat traffic in Laganas Bay
Summer turtle-watching, rental boats, and water taxis create a busy surface environment. Snorkelers and freedivers need visible floats, flags, and early starts.
Navagio and cliff instability
Shipwreck Beach and its viewpoints can be restricted due to rockfall and safety risks. Follow current official rules and never use unofficial paths down cliffs.
Wildlife and protected areas
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos protects loggerhead turtle habitat and other coastal ecosystems. Within the park, motorized watersports, spearfishing, recreational fishing methods, and some professional fishing activities are restricted or banned in designated zones. Boat speed and mooring rules apply. On nesting beaches, visit only during allowed daytime hours, keep beach activity within 5 m of the seafront where required, avoid dogs and vehicles, never dig, never use bright lights at night, and never touch turtles, nests, or hatchlings.
Do Not Do This
Avoid entering when turtle nesting beach rules. Confirm local briefings before committing.
