Shore access from the bay beach is simple, but low tide, low swell, and boat traffic are the real planning filters.

About Port Campbell Bay Reef

Port Campbell Bay Reef is a sheltered shore dive on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, with the reef wall starting from the beach and an old river bed alongside it. The western wall carries marine growth that shelters fish, crayfish, and invertebrates, and the bay also gives a simple snorkel-friendly entry when conditions are calm. It is tide- and swell-sensitive, so low-tide, low-swell windows work best. Boats cross the area, so a flag and float are part of normal planning.

Port Campbell Bay Reef Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

2m - 12m

Depth Note

Shallow shore reef with a 2-12 m profile; the most interesting section is near the end of the wall and around the jetty side of the bay.

Best Season

Calm-weather windows are best; rough southern-ocean conditions quickly make the site less comfortable.

Typical Conditions

Sheltered shore dive, but swell and tide govern whether the wall stays relaxed or bumpy, and visibility can swing widely with weather.

Safety & Access At Port Campbell Bay Reef

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Boat trafficSurgeWaves

Safety Notes

Use a dive flag and float, keep an eye on swell and tide, and stay conservative when boat traffic or rebound surge builds.

Access Restrictions

Best on low tide with low swell and an offshore westerly to easterly wind. It is much less appealing when the southern ocean is rough.

Legal Notes

Use the standard park and beach safety rules for the bay, especially where boats cross the area.

Local Intel For Port Campbell Bay Reef

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

Good shore dive for open-water divers when conditions are calm. The wall and jetty area provide the main structure, with deeper reef patches near the entrance.

Freedive

A calm-day snorkel or freedive works well because the bay is sheltered and the shallows hold the most obvious structure.

Snorkel

Good when the bay is calm; the reef wall, shallow bar, and jetty side are the most accessible parts.
