About épave saint Dominique

The Épave Saint Dominique is the wreck of a 70-metre Italian steel-hulled three-masted sailing ship, built in 1893 and lost on 16 June 1897 when a sudden mistral capsized it during a tow from the Vieux-Port toward l'Estaque for hull repairs. Three sailors did not survive. The wreck sits upright on a sandy bottom in Marseille's northern roadstead, masts long gone but hull structure and metalwork intact. The wooden deck between the upper and lower sections has deteriorated away over time, leaving the iron frame open to penetration from above and offering divers views up through the barred ribs toward the surface light — the effect is commonly described as spectacular and atmospheric. Coralligenous growth has colonised the hull, with spirographs and sponges giving the wreck colour, while groupers, conger eels, moray eels, scorpionfish, sea bream, and anthias are reliable encounters throughout the dive.

épave saint Dominique Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

25m - 33m

Depth Note

Upper accessible deck framework at 25-27m; wreck keel on sandy bottom at approximately 33m. Minimum dive certification N3/Level 2 required per local operator guidance.

Best Season

May through October offers the best balance of water temperature (14-24C), visibility, and surface conditions for boat dive access. Summer (July-September) water can reach 24-25C in the shallows. Winter brings exceptional underwater clarity but mistral conditions frequently cancel trips from November through March.

Typical Conditions

Water temperature 13-25C across the year; 18-24C in main season. Visibility typically 15-25m in season, sometimes higher in winter when conditions allow. Surface conditions are heavily weather-dependent: mistral can halt departures for consecutive days. The dive is sheltered from easterly winds.

Safety & Access At épave saint Dominique

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Overhead environment

Safety Notes

Deep wreck profile with overhead environment once inside the hull structure. Plan decompression-obligated dive appropriately or manage to a no-deco plan. Minimum advanced diver certification required by local operators. Surface conditions can change quickly with mistral; always check forecast before departure and ensure you have a surface marker buoy for ascent.

Access Restrictions

Dive certificate minimum N3 (advanced diver or equivalent) required by local operators. Access is coordinated through Marseille dive centres; independent diving without an operator is possible but requires local knowledge of mooring and navigation.

Legal Notes

The wreck sits in Marseille's coastal waters and divers should observe French maritime dive regulations. The wreck has no formal protected status but removal of artefacts is not permitted under French maritime law.

Local Intel For épave saint Dominique

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba Diving

Boat descent to the wreck on the sand; begin at the bow and work toward the stern, noting the anchor gear and hold sections. The open deck framework between the upper and lower hull is the site's signature feature and allows light penetration and interior access without full cave equipment. Stern visit and rudder area complete the standard route. Deep profile requires either a no-decompression plan or a planned decompression ascent. A torch is useful for interior sections.
