About La Péniche
La Péniche is the wreck of Le Sor, a Semaize-type canal barge deliberately sunk in 1981 off Saint-Cyprien to create an artificial reef and discourage illegal trawling in the Pyrénées-Orientales Mediterranean. The barge lies upright on a muddy bottom with its bow pointing west, in a depth range from the stern deck to the bow base, making it accessible on a single tank with enough bottom time to cover the full 30-metre hull. The structure is densely colonized: oyster shells cover the hull flanks, conger eels and moray eels occupy the holds, and grouper, lobsters, and nudibranchs are regulars. Fishing nets draped over the wreck are the primary hazard and divers should stay well clear rather than trying to remove them. Access is by boat from Saint-Cyprien or Argelès-sur-Mer with local dive operators.
