La Péniche
Barge wreck off Saint-Cyprien, colonized by congers, grouper, and nudibranchs.
Boat dive from Saint-Cyprien or Argelès-sur-Mer; fishing nets on the structure are an active hazard requiring careful navigation.
About La Péniche
La Péniche is the wreck of Le Sor, a Semaize-type canal barge deliberately sunk in 1981 off Saint-Cyprien to create an artificial reef and discourage illegal trawling in the Pyrénées-Orientales Mediterranean. The barge lies upright on a muddy bottom with its bow pointing west, in a depth range from the stern deck to the bow base, making it accessible on a single tank with enough bottom time to cover the full 30-metre hull. The structure is densely colonized: oyster shells cover the hull flanks, conger eels and moray eels occupy the holds, and grouper, lobsters, and nudibranchs are regulars. Fishing nets draped over the wreck are the primary hazard and divers should stay well clear rather than trying to remove them. Access is by boat from Saint-Cyprien or Argelès-sur-Mer with local dive operators.

Best Season
Spring through early autumn (May–October) is the primary diving season on the Roussillon Mediterranean coast. Summer brings warmest water temperatures and typically better underwater conditions. Tramontane wind can create rough surface conditions in any season.
Typical Conditions
Mediterranean temperate conditions. Water temperature 15–24°C seasonally. Visibility is variable; typically better in late spring before summer plankton blooms. The Gulf of Lion is subject to the Tramontane wind, which can create rough surface conditions - check forecasts before departure.

Safety Notes
Fishing nets draped across the hull are a documented hazard - do not attempt to remove or push through them. The wreck is penetrable but overhead sections require appropriate certification and line use. Depth reaches 28 m so gas planning for the intended profile is essential. Dive with a local operator familiar with the site.
Access Restrictions
No protected area restrictions noted. Dive with a licensed boat operator from Saint-Cyprien or Argelès-sur-Mer marina. Standard French maritime rules apply.
Legal Notes
No specific legal restrictions noted in available sources. Site may have local maritime zone guidelines; check with dive operators in Saint-Cyprien.

Scuba Diving
Boat dive from Saint-Cyprien or Argelès-sur-Mer. The 30m barge lies upright on a muddy seafloor, oriented east-west. Divers can swim the full hull length in a single pass and revisit the holds on a second. The stern has more structure and fish aggregation; the bow winch is a photographic focal point. Penetration is possible in the holds but requires a torch and line; nets on the exterior are a primary hazard to manage. Suitable for independently certified intermediate divers diving with a local operator.
