Do you need a boat to reach Giraffe?

Yes. Giraffe is normally reached by a long boat run to Koh Tang from Sihanoukville.

It stays in shallow recreational range, with a published maximum depth of about 14m.

Usually not. The long offshore run keeps it quieter than mainstream mainland sites.

Is Giraffe suitable for beginner divers?

It can work for newer divers with a guide because the reef is shallow, but the current makes it a better fit for confident beginners and intermediate divers.

What conditions should you expect at Giraffe?

Expect a shallow reef with good coral and clear water on calmer days, plus a real current component when the site turns into a drift.

What is Giraffe known for?

Giraffe is known for the tree-shaped name, shallow reef profile, hard and soft corals, and the chance for a drift-style dive when current lines up.

What marine life can you see at Giraffe?

Expect butterfly fish, clownfish, damselfish, angelfish, moray eels, nudibranchs, pufferfish, boxfish, triggerfish, barracuda, and sometimes cobia.

Why do divers choose Giraffe?

Divers choose Giraffe for the shallow coral, the macro life, and the chance to add a current-driven drift element without needing a deep site.

About Giraffe

Giraffe is a Koh Tang reef site named for the giraffe-like tree on the cliffs above the bay. It combines a shallow coral start with hard and soft corals, nudibranchs, small reef fish, and larger visitors such as trevally and cobia, with current turning it into a drift-style dive when conditions line up.

Site Conditions

Strong current

Safety Notes

Treat current as part of the plan and keep the dive guide-led; the site is shallow enough to tempt a relaxed approach, but the drift window can change that quickly.

Access Restrictions

Plan a long boat run to Koh Tang from Sihanoukville; this is a remote offshore island with limited civilian infrastructure and operator-led access.

Legal Notes

Follow local operator and island access rules, especially because Koh Tang has a military presence and very limited civilian facilities.

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba Diving

Best as a guided boat dive. It is shallow enough to stay training-friendly, but current can make it feel much more dynamic.

Freediving

Freediving only makes sense on the shallowest calm-day sections, and the site is primarily built for scuba.

Snorkeling

Snorkelers can enjoy the shallow coral and clear water on calm days, but the boat logistics and current favor scuba.
