Portofino cave wall with shrimp, groupers, and red coral
Portofino cave wall with shrimp, groupers, and red coral
Boat access and the overhead cave section make local guidance the safe default.
Grotta dei Gamberi is a boat-dived cave site on the east side of Punta Chiappa in the Portofino Marine Protected Area. The route starts on a rocky Posidonia slope, drops onto a vertical wall, and then reaches a narrow overhead cavern with a very fine-mud floor, so trim, buoyancy, and a careful exit are essential. It is an advanced cave dive that rewards experienced divers with shrimp, groupers, red coral, and strong marine life around the wall.

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.
Key Hazards
Safety Notes
The cave floor is fine mud and the exit is narrow, so buoyancy, trim, and careful finning are critical.
Access Restrictions
Boat-only, and the cave section is only for very experienced divers comfortable with overhead environments.
Legal Notes
Dives should remain within the Portofino MPA itinerary and the 50 m radius centered on the mooring structure.
Community notes to help plan your visit.
Scuba Diving
Expect a rocky Posidonia slope, a wall, and then a narrow cave section that needs careful buoyancy control. The return usually follows the mooring line.
Freediving
Not a freedive target. The cave section begins deep and needs scuba gear plus precise buoyancy control.
Snorkeling
Not a snorkel target for the cave itself. The interesting features sit too deep and inside an overhead environment.
