Usually entered from the Blue Hole side at Dwejra; access is straightforward in calm weather, but swell and surface movement quickly raise the difficulty.

About Azure Boulders

Azure Boulders is the dramatic boulder field beneath Gozo's former Azure Window, where giant limestone blocks, arch remnants, caverns, and swim-throughs create one of Malta's most photogenic terrain dives. The site can be explored on several lines from shallow broken rock to deeper outer blocks, so it works best for divers who treat it as an exposed shore dive with changing routes rather than a single simple circuit.

Azure Boulders Planning Details

Depth range, seasonality, and planning context.

Reported Depth

5m - 30m

Depth Note

Public profiles usually place the boulder field from roughly 5 m down to about 30 m, with multiple swim-through and cavern options depending on route choice.

Best Season

Most reliable in settled spring to autumn weather, while winter swell more often disrupts access at Dwejra.

Typical Conditions

Often clear with mild current in calm weather, but exposed enough that surge and surface movement can change the dive quickly when wind or swell builds from the west.

Safety & Access At Azure Boulders

Hazards, restrictions, and access requirements.

Key Hazards

Overhead environment

Safety Notes

Includes cavern, chimney, and swim-through features; use appropriate overhead-environment precautions.

Access Restrictions

Normally dived as a shore entry from the Dwejra or Blue Hole side in settled weather; operators commonly skip it when swell makes the west-coast exit unsafe.

Local Intel For Azure Boulders

Community notes to help plan your visit.

Scuba

A 5–30 m scuba dive with cavern, chimney, and swim-through routes, described as suitable for all levels.

Freedive

The shallow upper boulders can attract freedivers in calm conditions, but entry and exit are still exposed enough that it is not a casual session when swell is running.

Snorkel

Snorkeling is only realistic on the shallow edges in very calm conditions; the main appeal is a scuba route through boulders, caverns, and deeper blocks.
