Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM)
  • Typical transfer: 15-30 minutes drive to the Seven Mile Beach corridor depending on traffic
  • Entry requirement: Visitors generally need a passport or valid travel document, a paid return or onward ticket, and may be asked for proof of funds and accommodation details.
  • Getting around: Grand Cayman has taxis, rental cars, public buses, hotel shuttles, and some ferrystyle links around Camana Bay, Kaibo, and Rum Point.

Getting There

Most international travelers enter through Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman, then connect by Cayman Airways or Cayman Airways Express to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is the only practical base if you want maximum flight choice, resorts, and short itineraries. Cayman Brac has its own international airport and selected direct or connecting service, while Little Cayman is a small-aircraft destination. There is no regular public ferry between Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, so inter-island dive trips should be planned around flights, baggage limits, and weather buffers.

Getting Around

Grand Cayman has taxis, rental cars, public buses, hotel shuttles, and some ferry-style links around Camana Bay, Kaibo, and Rum Point. Driving is on the left, and visitors renting cars should confirm temporary driving-permit requirements with the rental agency. Public buses are useful but not a full replacement for a rental car if you are chasing early boat times. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are simpler and quieter, so reserve rental cars, lodge transfers, or taxis before arrival.

Entry Requirements

Visitors generally need a passport or valid travel document, a paid return or onward ticket, and may be asked for proof of funds and accommodation details. Many nationalities are visa-exempt for short stays, while others require a visa, so check current Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control rules before booking. Visitor permission is commonly granted for up to six months. Drug rules are strict, including cannabis, THC, and CBD products, even if legal at home. Declare cash when required and retain immigration documents until departure.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Bring soft-sided bags for Sister Island flights, especially if carrying fins, cameras, and exposure gear. Grand Cayman shops can solve most save-a-dive problems, but Cayman Brac and Little Cayman have fewer retail options. Confirm DIN/yoke needs, nitrox availability, camera rinse procedures, and whether Kittiwake or specialty-site fees are included in your dive package. Do not pack gloves for reef diving unless you have a medical need and operator approval.

Practicalities

Currency

Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD)

The Cayman Islands dollar is the official currency, and US dollars are widely accepted, usually with change given in KYD. Cards are widely used on Grand Cayman and at most established dive shops, hotels, and restaurants, but small cash is useful for taxis, tips, beach snacks, Sister Island incidentals, and small operators.

ATMs are easy to find in George Town, Seven Mile Beach, and major Grand Cayman districts. Cayman Brac has fewer options, and Little Cayman is much more limited, so withdraw cash before flying to the Sister Islands or confirm payment methods with your lodge.

Electricity

120V 60Hz A, B

North American plugs usually work without an adapter. Camera rooms, boats, and small Sister Island lodges may have limited charging space, so bring a compact power strip and spare batteries if you shoot underwater.

Communications

English is the working language and mobile coverage is strong on Grand Cayman, with generally good hotel Wi-Fi. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are quieter and can have patchier coverage on roads, beaches, and boats. Download maps, save operator numbers, and confirm meet-up points before remote shore, kayak, or cave days.

Language

English is the official and everyday language. Visitors will also hear Caymanian expressions and a broad mix of Caribbean, North American, and expatriate accents. Dive briefings, road signs, emergency services, and immigration information are in English.

Insurance

Buy travel insurance that covers diving, trip interruption, hurricane-season disruption, medical evacuation, and small-aircraft transfers. Divers should add dive accident coverage that includes recompression treatment and evacuation from Cayman Brac or Little Cayman if required. Photographers should check camera-flood and baggage limits separately.

Packing list

Pack a 3mm suit or thermal layer for repetitive dives, rashguard, reef-safe sunscreen, brimmed hat, reusable bottle, SMB, dive computer, mask strap, fin strap, and seasickness medication if you are sensitive. Use soft-sided bags for Sister Island flights. Bring closed shoes for Cayman Brac caves and trails, bug repellent for wet-season evenings, and no reef gloves unless medically necessary and accepted by the operator.
