Season planner for Indonesia

Indonesia does not have one national "high season". Instead, plan by region:

  • Southern routes (Bali, Lombok, Labuan Bajo and Komodo) are often easiest on the water in the drier part of the year, when winds and swell are more predictable.
  • Far eastern routes (especially Raja Ampat) often have their calmest seas in the opposite window. Across all regions, tides drive many of the most famous dives, so your operator's timing matters as much as the calendar. If you can travel in shoulder months, you often get calmer seas, good visibility, and fewer crowds.

Ideal: Drier weather in many southern islands, with trade winds often 25.0 kph to 35.0 kph on exposed coasts.

Plan Carefully: Wetter in much of western and southern Indonesia; rivers can reduce visibility near shore.

Indonesia spans multiple climate zones.

Ideal: Strong all-round window: calmer seas in many hubs, warm water, and good visibility around 15 m to 30 m.

Plan Carefully: Rainier in Bali and parts of the south; choose sheltered sites or focus on regions like Raja Ampat where conditions can still be strong.

For Komodo and Nusa Penida, ask your operator about tide tables and current strength.

Ideal: More calm-water windows for training and line sessions; warmer surface water around 26°C to 30°C.

Plan Carefully: Windier months can add surface chop and longer boat rides; choose bays and early-morning sessions.

Freedivers should be conservative in currentheavy areas like Nusa Penida.

Ideal: Generally calmer seas and clear water for reef snorkeling; great for family trips.

Plan Carefully: More rain and runoff in parts of Bali and the south can reduce visibility; go early, go guided, or swap to lagoons and sheltered bays.

Snorkeling safety is mostly about currents and boat traffic.

Cooler upwelling can bring ocean sunfish sightings on deeper dives around Nusa Penida. Expect thermoclines and plan a 5mm suit if you run cold.

Manta encounters are possible year-round on trips from Nusa Penida, with conditions depending more on swell and current than the calendar.

Plankton-rich periods often mean more manta activity in parts of Komodo. Wet-season diving can still be excellent, but plan for rain and occasional rough crossings.

Some Indonesian islands, including the Derawan Islands, are important turtle areas. Nesting and hatching peaks vary, so ask local guides for respectful viewing practices.
