What It Feels Like

Indonesia is a choose-your-own-adventure dive country. Use Bali as an easy launchpad for shore dives and day boats, then branch out: big pelagics and tide-driven action in Nusa Penida and Komodo, wall diving in Bunaken and Manado, and world-class reef density in Raja Ampat. Visibility commonly lands around 10 m to 30 m, and water is usually 26°C to 30°C with cooler thermoclines in parts of Bali and Komodo during upwelling season.

Signature Sites

Start Here

  • Raja Ampat

Indonesia's flagship for Coral Triangle biodiversity.

  • Komodo National Park and Labuan Bajo

Currentswept channels, dramatic seamounts, and consistent biganimal action.

  • Nusa Penida

Mantas are the headline, and the cooler season can bring mola mola.

Level Up

  • Bunaken and Manado

Wall diving with clear water, turtles, and easy access from Manado.

  • Derawan Islands

Outerisland reefs, turtles, and lagoons in northeast Borneo.

Advanced

  • Tulamben and Amed

A shorediving playground with calm entries, macro life, and famous wreck diving.

Planning Playbook

Operator Checklist

  • Start by deciding what matters most: biodiversity, big animals, convenience, or budget.
  • Easiest logistics: base on Bali and split time between Padangbai and Candidasa and Tulamben and Amed. Add Nusa Penida by fast boat for mantas.
  • Big-current signature diving: plan Komodo with a reputable operator who schedules dives to tides. If you are newer, ask for sites and timing that keep currents manageable.
  • Maximum reef density: Raja Ampat is typically a longer, pricier trip because flights and boat transfers add up. Consider shoulder seasons if you are flexible.
  • Relaxed remote islands: Togean Islands and the Derawan Islands reward slow travel and longer stays.

Conditions Fallback

  • Big-current signature diving: plan Komodo with a reputable operator who schedules dives to tides. If you are newer, ask for sites and timing that keep currents manageable.
  • Maximum reef density: Raja Ampat is typically a longer, pricier trip because flights and boat transfers add up. Consider shoulder seasons if you are flexible.
  • If you are planning multiple regions, build in at least 24 hours (preferably 18 to 24 hours) after your last dive before flying, and use those days for beaches, culture, and good sleep.

Avoid

  • Do not ignore currents and occasional downcurrents advisories from local operators.
