Indonesia is a choose-your-own-adventure dive country. Use Bali as an easy launchpad for shore dives and day boats, then branch out: big pelagics and tide-driven action in Nusa Penida and Komodo, wall diving in Bunaken and Manado, and world-class reef density in Raja Ampat. Visibility commonly lands around 10 m to 30 m, and water is usually 26°C to 30°C with cooler thermoclines in parts of Bali and Komodo during upwelling season.
Places to explore
Bunaken is North Sulawesi's wall-diving classic: coral gardens in snorkel depth, then dramatic drop-offs that run for kilometers. Base in Manado for smooth logistics and to add day trips beyond the park, or stay on Bunaken or Siladen for short boat rides and early entries.
Start by deciding what matters most: biodiversity, big animals, convenience, or budget.
If you are planning multiple regions, build in at least 24 hours (preferably 18 to 24 hours) after your last dive before flying, and use those days for beaches, culture, and good sleep.
The Gilis are built for easy, high-reward diving: warm water, short boat rides, and a menu that ranges from gentle coral gardens to current-swept drifts. Beginners get confidence-building reefs and turtle-heavy sites, while experienced divers can chase adrenaline at deeper ridges when tides run.
Komodo is Indonesia's drift diving classroom and playground. Expect negative entries, reef packed seamounts, manta cleaning stations, and healthy hard coral slopes.
Penida is Bali's big-animal circuit. Morning boats target Manta Point and the north-coast drifts before channel currents build.
East Bali offers a rare mix: relaxed shore dives and coral restoration in Padangbai, then high-energy boat dives off Candidasa where currents can deliver sharks, rays, and big schools. The sites sit close together, so you can build a week that starts easy and ramps up.
Currents power fish action across pinnacles and channels. North Raja Ampat's Dampier Strait offers drift classics like Cape Kri, Blue Magic, and Manta Ridge, while the Fam Islands and Misool deliver hard-coral gardens, vibrant soft corals, and oceanic mantas.
Expect relaxed boat diving across clear caps, walls, and volcanic pins. Visibility is commonly 20 m to 40 m, water sits around 27°C to 30°C, and currents are usually manageable.
Tulamben and Amed are Bali's easiest way to stack dives without living on a boat schedule. Most sites are shore entries, so you can time the USAT Liberty wreck for sunrise, repeat it at night, and still add a macro-focused black-sand dive the same day.
Derawan diving is a two-speed destination: calm, turtle-filled reefs when you want an easy day, and tide-timed wall and point dives when you want adrenaline. Sangalaki is the manta headline, Kakaban brings steep walls, and Maratua adds current-driven action with schooling fish.
