Logistics

Use this travel brief to set arrival flow, local transit, and gear movement before you lock your itinerary.

Quick Facts

  • Primary airport: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)
  • Typical transfer: 55 km drive
  • Entry requirement: Entry rules depend on passport and purpose of travel.
  • Getting around: Malaysia is easiest by domestic flight when crossing between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah or Sarawak.

Getting There

Most international arrivals route through Kuala Lumpur (KUL), then connect domestically to the coast that matches your plan. For Peninsular east coast islands, fly to Kota Bharu (KBR), Kuala Terengganu (TGG), or Kuantan (KUA) and transfer by road to the jetty. For Sabah, fly to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) for west coast islands or Tawau (TWU) for Semporna.

Malaysia's main international gateway and the most common entry point for connecting onward to island regions across Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

Transport: Airport trains, Airport taxis, Ride-hailing apps, Car rentals

Getting Around

Malaysia is easiest by domestic flight when crossing between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah or Sarawak. Within Peninsular Malaysia, long-distance buses and private transfers connect airports to jetties. In cities and many tourist towns, ride-hailing apps are common; on islands, transport is usually by foot, bicycle, or boat taxi. For remote coasts like Kudat, renting a car is often the simplest option.

Entry Requirements

Entry rules depend on passport and purpose of travel. Standard expectations include a passport valid for at least 6 months and proof of onward travel. Requirements can change, so check the Malaysian Immigration Department guidance and any digital arrival registration rules well before departure.

Gear Logistics Checklist

Island dive hubs have rental gear, but sizing and availability vary in peak months. If you bring your own kit, pack regulators and computers in carry-on, and protect lithium batteries according to airline rules. Plan rinse and dry time before flying, and keep a dry bag for boat transfers. For Sipadan-area itineraries, ask your operator about required surface signaling devices and whether they provide reef hooks or require your own.

Practicalities

Currency

Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)

Cards work in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, and many resorts, but cash is still common for jetties, park fees, small restaurants, and boat taxis on islands.

ATMs are easy in major cities and airports. On smaller islands, ATMs may be limited or absent, so withdraw on the mainland before you transfer by boat.

Electricity

240V 50Hz G

Most accommodations use the UK-style Type G plug. Boats may have limited charging outlets, so bring a power bank and a multi-USB charger.

Communications

Malaysia has strong mobile coverage in cities and many coastal towns. On smaller islands, signal can be patchy and power outages happen, so download maps and keep offline copies of bookings. Tourist eSIMs and airport SIM counters are common at major gateways.

Language

Bahasa Malaysia is the national language. English is widely spoken in tourism and diving hubs, and signage is often bilingual. In Sabah and Sarawak, you will also hear local languages alongside Malay and English.

Insurance

Bring travel insurance that covers diving, and consider dedicated dive accident coverage. Confirm that your policy covers medical evacuation from islands and remote coasts, not only hospital bills. Save the emergency hotline number for your provider before you enter the water.

Packing list

For most divers and snorkelers, a 3mm wetsuit or rashguard is enough in 27°C to 30°C water. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag for boat days, and lightweight rain protection in shoulder and monsoon months. Divers should carry a computer, SMB, and any prescription mask or specialty gear, because island stock is limited.
